4 x 800 Relay Places Third; Maguire Finishes Ninth in 5,000m for Delaware at Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK -- Junior Brad Dodson (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV) broke his own school record in the 1,000 meters to place fifth overall and led the distance medley relay team to a third place finish as the University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational Friday and Saturday at the New York City Armory.

The meet included some of the top collegiate competitors in the country, including participants from track and field powers University of Texas, Louisiana State University, and the University of Arkansas.

The women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team of Sari Weissbard (Fairlawn/Fairlawn, NJ), Toni Riggi (South Glen Falls/South Glen Falls, NY) Colleen O’Brien (North Hunterdon/Lebanon, NJ), and Jessica Leitsch (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) was the top Blue Hens’ top finisher with a third place finish in a time of 9:42.86 while the top individual effort was put in by freshman Brooke Maguire (Marblehead/Marblehead, MA - at right) who placed ninth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 18:02.98.

Dodson broke his second school record of the indoor season as he covered the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:26.41, breaking his own standard of 2:28.44 set last season. He also teamed with Gregg Cantwell (Ward Melville/Port Jefferson, NY), Steve Jackson (James Madison/Brooklyn, NY) and Will Jurkowski (North Salem/North Salem, NY) to place third in the distance medley relay event with a clocking of 10:09.25.

Also for the UD men, Kyle Schmid posted the eighth best clocking in the 3,000 meters in school history to place 27th (8:39.23), Cantwell was 38th in the mile (4:25.92), Tyler Mayforth finished 39th in the 5,000 meters (15:27.01), and Jackson was 85th in the 400 meters (52.13).

On the women’s side, Julia Somers was 12th in the 5,000 meters (18:05.66), Kelli McDonald was 13th in the pole vault (10-10), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Paula Green, Rayna Horsey, Daniella Price, and Asha Quant was 21st (4:03.76), Rachel Young was 25th in the shot put (41-8 1/2), Alexi Capsouras was 48th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.26, second best time in UD history) and 75th in the 400 meters (1:01.21), Price was 54th in the 60 meters (7.92) and 68th in the 400 meters (1:00.92), Green was 58th in the 200 meters (26.22, eighth best in UD history) and 67th in the 60 meters (8.06), and Brittany Wright was 82nd in the 400 meters (1:02.55).

Both Blue Hen teams will next be in action Feb. 10-11 at the St. Valentine’s Invitational at Boston University.
