BOSTON -- Jared Wasser placed sixth in the men’s shot put and Rachel Young posted a seventh place finish in the women’s shot put to highlight performances by the University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and fields teams at the St. Valentine’s Invitational this past weekend at the Boston University Armory.
The University of Delaware women posted three top 10 finishes and eight top 20 finishes while the Blue Hen men placed one in the top 10 and five in the top 20.
Wasser (Wootton/North Potomac, MD), a first-year transfer from Robert Morris, was Delaware’s top finisher as he placed sixth in the shot put with an IC4A qualifying toss of 52-8, the fourth best mark in school history.
For the women, Rachel Young (Sparta/Sparta, NJ) (at right) was seventh in the shot put (42-6) and 25th in the weight throw (43-2 1/4), Kelli McDonald (Phoenixville/Phoenixville, PA) was eighth in the pole vault (11-6 1/4), and Alexi Capsouras (Randolph/Randolph, NJ) was 10th in the 55 meter hurdles (8.56), 11th in the 500 meters (1:18.98), and was 14th in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:58.97). McDonald’s pole vault performance was the second best in school history while Capsouras posted the second best 55 meter hurdles time and fifth best 500 meter time in Delaware history.
Other highlights for the UD men included Will Jurkowski placing 12th in the 500 meters, the third best time in UD history, Brad Dodson qualified for the IC4A in his fourth event this season by placing 16th in the 3,000 meters (8:28.08), and Gregg Cantwell broke the UD freshman record in the 3,000 meters by over eight seconds by placing 21st (8:31.92).
Also for the Hens, Jake Cohen and Matt Arbaugh tied for 17th in the pole vault (13-7 1/4) and Kyle Casella was 18th in the weight throw (48-7 3/4) and 30th in the shot put (43-1 3/4).
Also for the Delaware women, the distance medley relay team placed 13th in 12:29.73, the 4 x 400 meter relay team placed 14th in 3:58.97, Amy Miller was 19th in the pole vault (10 1/2), and Julia Somers finished 19th in the 1,000 meters (3:05.21).
Both Delaware teams will compete at the Princeton Invitational Feb. 18.
