O'Brien, Bennett Win for Delaware at New York City Invitational

NEW YORK -- A pair of freshmen led the way once again for the University of Delaware indoor track and field teams at the New York City Collegiate Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet Friday at the New York City Armory.

Blue Hen athletes captured three first place finishes at the meet, including two by freshmen as Will Jurkowski captured the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:55.57 and Colleen O'Brien won the women's mile run with a time of 5:12.03. Also picking up a victory for the Blue Hens was Casey Bennett, who won the women's pole vault with a jump of 10-11 3/4. The victory was Bennett's 12th career meet first place finish, including her second this year. The meet included over 25 teams from throughout the East.

Jurkowski, who also won the 800 meters at last week's Delaware Invitational, also ran a leg of the 4 x 800 meter relay team that placed fourth in a time of 7:58.97. Also for the Hens, Rashaad Woodard was fifth in the 60 meters (7.01), Roger Brown was sixth in the 60 meters (7.04), the 4 x 400 meter relay team was seventh (3:25.13), Chris Dixon was seventh in the 400 meters (49.91), and Charlie Williams was 10th in the 400 meters (50.57).

O'Brien, the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in cross country this past fall, won her second meet title in two weeks after capturing the 800 meters at last week's Delaware Invitational. In addition to winning the mile Friday night, O'Brien also placed 10th in the 1,000 meters (3:06.25).

Also for the UD women, Brittany Wright was fourth in the 200 meters with a school record time of 25.45 - breaking the mark of 25.56 by Daniella Price in 2003, and also finished 11th in the 200 meters (59.10). In addition, Kaitlin McGowan and Amy Miller tied for fourth in the pole vault (9-6 1/4), Kate Klim was seventh in the 3,000 meters (10:48.57), Kristen Frustillo was seventh in the 200 meters (26.39) and 10th in the 400 meters (59.01), Toni Riggi was eighth in the mile (5:28.96), and Rayna Horsey was 10th in the 200 meters (26.71).
