HAVERFORD, PA -- Sophomore Greg Stirparo won the weight throw, outdistancing teammate Dave Schwartz by just a centimeter, and Brandon Swartout won the long jump for the University of Delaware men's indoor track and field team at Friday's Jack Pyrah Invitational, hosted by Villanova at nearby Haverford College.

Junior Amanda Marshall (at right) scored an easy victory in the women’s weight throw with a heave of 15.47 meters, more than a meter further than any other competitor. Freshman Briana Gray took home Delaware's only other individual title, clearing 1.57 meters in the high jump for the win, while juniors Kelli McDonald and Annie Fulton placed second in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively.

Stirparo unleashed a toss of 14.21 meters, while Schwartz placed second with a 14.20-meter effort and senior Doug Alpers completed a 1-2-3 Blue Hen sweep with a throw of 13.44 meters. Swartout won the long jump with a leap of 6.81 meters.

Other top finishers for the Blue Hen men included freshman Mike Tait, who blazed a 2:02.46 in the 800 meters to take second place, fellow freshman John Viotto, was second in the shot put at 14.82 metersl, freshman Kevin McCove took second in the triple jump at 12.35 meters, and freshman Jamie Igo was second in the high jump (1.78m).

Freshman Steve Vincent chased Tait home in the 800, crossing the line third in 2:02.51, senior Brad Dodson placed third in a competitive 3,000-meter field (8:48.12), and Jake Cohen was third in the pole vault (4.12m).

For the UD women, freshman Leah Putman burst onto the scene with a pair of third-place finishes, clocking 8.66 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles and leaping 10.85 meters in the triple jump. Junior Laura Chirico also performed well in the pole vault, placing third with a clearance of 3.20 meters.

The meet, Delaware's first of the winter season, honored longtime Villanova track coach Jack Pyrah and drew East Coast contenders Villanova, La Salle, Temple, and Haverford.
