NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware captured its
second straight invitational title by winning seven
individual titles and the Blue Hen women placed third out of
five teams at the Delaware Invitational Saturday at Delaware
Field House.
The Delaware men took first place with 176 points to
outdistance Maryland (169), LaSalle (101), and Rider (97).
Maryland won the women's meet with 246 points followed by
Pennsylvania (167), Delaware (57), Rider (44), and LaSalle
(41).
Taking home first place finishes for the Blue Hens were
Butch Patrick (Newark HS) in the 60 meters (6.94),
Steve Sinko (St. Mark's HS) in the mile (4:19.77),
Mike Puglisi (St. Mark's HS) in the 3,000 meters
(15:07.06), the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Mark
Coyle (East/West Chester, PA), Troy Bockius (Dover HS),
Joe Quigley (Salesianum HS), and Sinko (7:57.32),
Jamin Elliott (Churchland/Portsmouth, VA) in the
triple jump (46-2 3/4), Eric Sands (Tunkhannock, PA
HS) in the shot put (49-6 1/4), and Mike Chadwick
(Upper St. Clair/Pittsburgh, PA) in the 35 lb. weight throw
(48-8 3/4).
Also for Delaware, Quigley was second in the 800 meters
(1:57.07), Coyle was second in the 1,000 meters (2:33.91),
Michael Reh (Middletown, NJ HS) was second in the
high jump with a UD freshman record 6-6, Elliott was second
in the long jump (21-7 1/4), Bernie Hayes (St.
Joseph's/Ridgewood, NJ) was second in the triple jump (42-9
3/4), and Tom Marando (St. Mark's HS) was second in
the shot put (46-1 1/2).
Maryland Dontae Bugg was the top individual of the meet
as he won the 200 meters, 60 meter hurdles, and long jump,
and placed second in the 60 meter hurdles.
In the women's meet, Maryland won 11 events to take the
team title. Delaware's lone individual champion was Caron
Marra (Newark HS) who won the 5,000 meters in
18:50.05.
Also for the Hens, Kristen Robbins
(Hempfield/Landisville, PA) was second in the 1,000
meters (3:03.52), Jenn Dilzer (Central Reg./Pine
Beach, NJ) and Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ)
tied for third in the pole vault (6-6 3/4), and Brandy
Connell (St. Mark's HS) was third in the 20 lb. weight
throw with an ECAC qualifying distance of 52-1 3/4.
