Delaware Men Win
Title; Women 5th at America East Track
Meet
NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware men won their first team title since 1993 and the
Blue Hen women placed tied for fifth at the America East
Indoor Track and Field Championships held Saturday at
Delaware Field House.
Delaware sophomore Butch Patrick
(Newark HS) set two conference and school records in
winning the 55 meter dash and long jump to earn the Most
Outstanding Athlete Award in the men's section as he led the
Blue Hens to their second title since joining the league in
1991. The Hens took five first place finishes and six second
place finishes.
The Blue Hen women captured just one
first place finish as Ashley Forlini (Exeter/Reading,
PA) set a new America East and school record with a leap of
10-0. The Hens also got a second place finish from Brandy
Connell (St. Mark's HS) in the weight throw (54-1
3/4).
In the women's race, Boston University's
Larissa Kleinmann dominated the distance running, capturing
the 1,000 meters in 2:56.60, the mile in 4:56.32, and the
3,000 meters in 9:54.34 to earn the women's Most Outstanding
Performer Award.
Delaware, led by America East Coach of
the Year Jim Fischer, totalled 143.83 points to
outdistance Boston University (101), two-time defending
champion New Hampshire (99.67), Northeastern (79), Maine
(62.50), Towson (56), and Vermont (16).
Boston University had 181 points to edge
1998 champion Northeastern (171) on the women's side.
Vermont was third with 71 followed by New Hampshire (51),
Delaware and Maine (35), and Towson (13).
The meet's lone triple winner was
Northeastern's Nikiya Reid who captured the 60 meters
(7.70), 200 meters (25.01), and 60 meter hurdles (8.94).
Northeastern Jacqueline Sedgwick won both the shot put
(46-9) and weight throw (55-10 1/4).
Patrick, who also placed fourth in the
200 meters, won the 60 meters in a time of 6.87 and followed
with a leap of 24-0 1/4 in the long jump to cap a
record-setting day. Also setting an America East men's
record was Vermont's Jeffrey Guilmette who won the shot put
with a throw of 55-7.
Also taking first place finishes for the
Blue Hens were Joe Quigley (Salesianum), who won the
1,000 meters (2:28.95), Dave Geesaman (Central
Dauphin/Harrisburg, PA) won the 5,000 meters (14:59.51),
and Jeff McIlvaine (Upper Dublin/Oreland, PA) won the
pole vault (13-7 3/4).
Placing second for the Hens were Kevin
Danahy (Dover HS) in the 3,000 meters (8:40.58), John
Marino (Iona Prep/Yonkers, NY) in the 60 meter hurdles
(8.48), Jamin Elliott (Churchland/Portsmouth, VA)
with a school record in the triple jump (48-8), Tom
Marando (St. Marks' HS) in the shot put (50-3 1/4), and
the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Gary Fairchild
(Wheaton/Norwich, CT), Andrew Johnson (Christiana
HS), Brian Demlein (Christian Bros./DeWitt, NY), and
Bokah Worjolah (Dickinson HS) in 3:24.21, the 4 x
800m relay team of Mark Coyle (East/West Chester,
PA), Troy Bockius (Dover HS), Steve Sinko (St.
Mark's HS), and Quigley (7:49.50).
Elliott was also third in the long jump
(22-11), Eric Sands (Tunkhannock, PA HS) was third in
the shot put (49-1 1/2), Coyle was fourth in the 1,000
meters (2:31.47), Fairchild was fourth in the 500 meters
(1:07.54) and long jump (22-8 1/2), Bockius was fifth in the
mile (4:16.31), Ian Bass was fifth in the long jump
(22-5), Mike Chadwick (Upper St. Clair/Pittsburgh,
PA) was fifth in the weight throw (51-9 1/4), Bernie
Hayes (St. Joseph's Regional/Ridgewood,NJ) was fifth in
the triple jump (44-2 3/4), Sinko was fifth in the 800
meters (1:56.85) and sixth in the mile (4:16.40), and
Mike DiGennaro (Hamilton-Wenham/Essex, MA) was fifth
in the 3,000 meters (8:48.05) and sixth in the 5,000 meters
(15:20.80).
Other top Delaware women's finishes saw
the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Kristen Robbins
(Hempfield/Landisville, PA), Jennifer Crocco (North
Penn/Hatfield, PA), Jennifer Krisch (Great
Valley/Malvern, PA), and Kasia Brodka (Manville, NJ
HS) place third (9:44.90), Caron Marra (Newark HS)
placed fourth in the 5,000 meters (18:07.82), Robbins placed
fifth in the 500 meters (1:19.46), and Sarah Johnson
(RHAM/Hebron, CT) placed fifth in the 800 meters
(2:20.0).
