Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The University of Delaware men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2001 season with impressive showings at the Navy Invitational Saturday.

The women finished second in the six-team meet, while the Blue Hen men finished fourth of six teams. Navy's men's and women's team both finished first in the meet.

Individually, the women were paced by a seventh-place finish by Aimee Alexander with a time of 19:52.62 and Karen Reber's eighth-place finish in 19:53.15. Sarah Johnson was 12th, while teammate Ashley Olsen was 15th. Navy's Mel Stock won the race in 19:08.94.

On the men's side, Delaware was led by Pat Riley, who finished 14th with a time of 26:13.20. Matt Swiezbinkski followed in 20th place with a mark of 26:38.90.

The teams will run next weekend at Carpenter State Park when they host the UD Invitational beginning at 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
