Blue Hen Women's Cross Country Finishes Third at University of Delaware Invitational #1

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s cross country team finished in second place while the Blue Hen women were third as both teams competed in the University of Delaware Invitational #1 held Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.

The Delaware men’s team finished second out of seven Division I teams with 38 points, behind only Pennsylvania, which captured the men’s meet with 31 points. Hofstra was third with 58 points, followed by Temple (110), Delaware State (174), Coppin State (174), and Morgan State (189). University of the Sciences in Philadelphia won the Division II/III meet with 37 points, finishing ahead of Wilmington College (69), Gwynedd-Mercy (85), Lincoln (92), and Holy Family (117).

The Blue Hen women’s team placed third out of seven Division I teams with 105 points, finishing behind Villanova with 21 points and Pennsylvania with 41 points. Towson finished fourth with 110 points, ahead of Hofstra (117), Morgan State (184), and Delaware State (212). Stockton won the Division II/III meet with 49 points, ahead of Wilmington College (52), University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (72), Gwynedd-Mercy (109), Lincoln (125), and Holy Family (141).

Senior Kyle Schmid led the UD men’s team by finishing third in the eight-kilometer course in 26:35, while fellow senior P.J. Meany came in fourth in 26:35 and Nick Pyle placed fifth in 26:36. Chris Bourke finished in 10th place in 26:57, while Kevin Kemmerle was 16th in 27:16 and Phil Weigel came in 21st in 27:28.

Mike Ward finished in 27th place by crossing the line in 27:47, while Tim Brock was 28th in 27:50 and Alex Gambogi came in 30th in 27:55. Jimmy Daly was 32nd for the Blue Hens in 28:10, while Craig Lebro came in 33rd in 28:14 and Pete McBride was 42nd in 28:51. Luke Grau of Pennsylvania won the men’s race with a time of 26:22, narrowly edging teammate Daniel Howard.

Freshman Cassie White again led the Blue Hen women’s team by finishing in 17th place in the six-kilometer course in 23:51, while Karen Mandrachia was 21st in 24:08. Yianna Antonopoulos (above) placed 29th in 24:31, while Liz Paul came in 30th in 24:33.

Julia Somers finished 33rd for the Blue Hens in 24:40, while Christine Sloat was 34th in 24:43 and Annie Kowtoniuk placed 35th in 24:45. Jennifer Watunya finished in 39th place in 24:58, while Sarah Vernon was 41st in 24:59, Isabel Graf was 42nd in 25:00, and Kellyn Wright was 45th in 25:15.

Alison Smith of Villanova captured the women’s race by finishing with a time of 22:29.

Both Blue Hen cross country teams will be back in action on Friday, September 28 when they compete in the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University.
