Delaware Women Place 27th at Paul Short Cross Country Invitational

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The University of Delaware men placed 26th out of 41 teams and the Blue Hen women finished 27th out of 47 teams at the Paul Short Cross Country Invitational Friday afternoon at Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus.

Villanova clinched the men’s team title with 50 points while Princeton captured the women’s race with 45 points. The meet included some of the top teams in the region and the nation. Both Delaware teams returned to action from a 13-day layoff.

The Delaware men posted 683 points to place 26th overall as Kyle Schmid placed 73rd with a time of 25:48 over the eight-kilometer course. Also for the Hens, Nick Pyle was 87th (25:45), Kevin Kemmerle was 148th (26:13), Mike Ward finished 186th (26:35), Alex Gambogi was 189th (26:37), P.J. Meany placed 219th (27:07), and Brad Dodson was 233rd (27:29). Bobby Curtis of Villanova won the race in a time of 23:39.

In the junior varsity race, Delaware was led by Jimmy Daly’s 106th place finish in a time of 27:20.

The Blue Hen women earned 741 points to finish 27th overall as Christina Antonopolous (at right) placed 111th in a time of 22:40 over the six-kilometer layout. Also for the Hens, Karen Mandrachia was 130th (22:53), Cassie White placed 144th (23:00), Yianna Antonopolous finished 158th (23:13), Liz Paul posted a time of 23:42 to place 198th, Christine Sloat was 227th (24:02), and Annie Kowtoniuk was 252nd (24:28). Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech won the race in a time of 19:59.

In the junior varsity race, Colleen O’Brien was the top Delaware finisher as she placed 29th with a time of 23:00.

Delaware will continue action Oct. 5 at the Monmouth Invitational.
