BETHLEHEM, PA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country squads both posted top 15 finishes at the NCAA District 2 Championships Saturday afternoon at Lehigh University.
The Delaware women brought home a 12th place finish out of 28 teams while the Blue Hen men improved one spot from last year with a 15th place showing out of 28 squads.
The meet includes NCAA Division I teams in the mid-atlantic region with the top teams and individuals earning berths to the NCAA Championships Nov. 19 at Indiana State. Princeton won the women’s team title followed by West Virginia, Georgetown, Penn State, and Villanova. Georgetown won the men’s title followed by Villanova, Princeton, American, and Navy.
Christina Antonopoulos (at right) led the Blue Hen women for the fifth straight meet and improved 16 spots from last season with a 38th place finish in a time of 21:34 over the five-kilometer course. Also for the Hens, Cassie White was 65th (22:09), Colleen O’Brien placed 85th (22:31), Yianna Antonopoulos finished 91st (22:42), Karen Mandrachia placed 96th (22:49), Jennifer Watunya finished 133rd (23:36), and Liz Paul posted a 152nd place showing (24:09).
On the men’s side, senior Kyle Schmid led the Blue Hens for the fourth time this fall as he covered the eight-kilometer course in 31:26 to place 48th overall, 22 spots better than a year ago. Also for Delaware, Nick Pyle placed 79th (32:07), Kevin Kemmerle placed 101st (32:32), Brad Dodson finished 103rd (32:34), Mike Ward finished 106th (32:37), Jimmy Daly placed 123rd (33:06), and Chris Bourke finished 126th (33:13).
Both Delaware teams will close out the season next Saturday at the IC4A and ECAC Championships at Van Cortland State Park in New York.
