FARMINGDALE, NY -- Sophomore Christina Antonopoulos (at right) led all University of Delaware runners with an eighth place finish in the women’s race as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed fourth in the team standings at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships hosted by Hofstra University at Bethpage State Park Friday morning.
The Delaware women, who placed three runners in the top 30, placed fourth at the championships for the third straight year while the UD men, who had five runners in the top 30, improved upon last year’s seventh place showing and placed fourth for the third time in the last four years.
William & Mary once again dominated the men’s and women’s races with the Tribe men, the No. 28 ranked team in the nation, winning their eighth straight team title backed by individual champion and two-time All-American Christo Landry and the W&M women taking their fifth straight team title. Georgia State’s Rachel Hannah captured the women’s individual title. Defending women’s champion Dena Spickard of James Madison placed seventh.
George Mason was second in the men’s meet followed by Georgia State, Delaware, Hofstra, Virginia Commonwealth, Northeastern, and UNC Wilmington. On the women’s side, James Madison was second followed by Georgia State, Delaware, Northeastern, Towson, Hofstra, UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, and George Mason.
Antonopoulos, a sophomore from York, PA (York Suburban HS) who led the UD women for the fourth straight race, covered the six-kilometer course in 22:18.8 to place eighth overall, improving upon a 20th place finish from last year and posting the highest finish by a UD woman since current teammate Colleen O’Brien placed third at the 2005 CAA meet. Also for the Hens, Cassie White placed 23rd (22:50.2), O’Brien placed 27th (23:09.5) after placing 57th a year ago, Yianna Antonopoulos was 33rd (23:21.8), Isabel Graf finished 36th (23:36.3), Karen Mandrachia was 41st (23:48.4), and Liz Paul was 43rd (23:51.6).
Nick kPyle, a sophomore from Newark, DE (St. Mark’s HS), led the Blue Hen men for the first time this season with a time of 25:41.1 over the eight-kilometer course, improving upon his 48th place finish last season.
Also for the Hens, Phil Weigel was 22nd (25:52.0), Chris Bourke placed 23rd (25:55.8), Brad Dodson was 25th (25:59.6), Mike Ward was 26th (26:02.0), Kevin Kemmerle was 32nd (26:15.5), and Kyle Schmid, the team’s top finisher three times this season, was 36th (26:30.7).
Both Delaware teams will continue action Nov. 10 at the NCAA District 2 Championships at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
