NEWARK, DE --- Both the University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country teams captured teams titles as the Blue Hens hosted the annual Delaware Invitational #2 Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.
The Delaware women captured their third team title of the season as sophomore Julia Somers (right) captured the individual title, covering the five-kilometer course in a time of 18:26.27, nearly seven seconds faster than the runner-up. The Blue Hens also won team titles at the Hofstra Invitational and Delaware Invitational #1 earlier this season.
The Delaware men also captured their third team title of the fall as the Hens placed three runners in the top 10 led by Gregg Cantwell’s fifth place finish. The Blue Hens also won team titles at the Hofstra Invitational and Delaware Invitational #1 earlier this season.
In the women’s race, Somers (Haverford/Haverford, PA) won her first career individual title and led the Hens for the third straight meet with her time of 18:26.27, over six seconds better than runner-up Abby Pullen of Hofstra (18:33.05). Delaware registered 62 points to capture the title in the 16-team field. American was second with 71 points followed by Towson, Hofstra, Northeastern, Millersville, West Chester, Howard, Morgan State, George Mason, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Temple, Lincoln, Coppin State, and Goldey-Beacom.
Also for the Hens, freshman Christina Antonopoulos was 10th in a time of 19:04.02, Brooke Maguire placed 15th (19:29.09), Liz Paul was 17th (19:34.94), and Ioanna Antonopoulos was 19th (19:51.49).
On the men’s side, Delaware posted 64 points to outdistance runner-up American (78) in the 14-team field. Hofstra was third followed by West Chester, Temple, Millersville, Northeastern, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Coppin State, Howard, Lincoln, Goldey-Beacom, and Morgan State. Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Alfred Singoei was the individual winner as he covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:17.19, nine seconds better than runner-up Anthony Littlejohn of Coppin State.
Cantwell (Ward Melville/Port Jefferson, NY) was Delaware’s top finisher as he covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:37.77. Also for the Hens, Tyler Mayforth placed ninth (26:58.87), Nick Pyle was 10th (27:00.72), and Kevin Kemmerle was 17th (27:19.38).
Both Delaware teams will take next week off in preparation for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships which the Hens will host Oct. 27 at White Clay Creek State Park.
