BETHLEHEM, PA -- The University of Delaware women’s cross country team finished in 15th place while the UD men came in 41st place as the Blue Hens competed in the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University Friday afternoon.
The Delaware women placed 15th out of 35 teams with 433 points, while the Blue Hen men were 41st out of 42 teams with 1131 points. Princeton took the women’s team title with 61 points, edging Wisconsin by one point, while Villanova captured the men’s title with 103 points.
Julia Somers (at right) led the Blue Hen women’s team by finishing in 56th place after covering the six-kilometer course in 22:09, while Colleen O’Brien placed 60th in 22:17. Christina Antonopoulos came in 84th in 22:38, while Brook Maguire finished 96th in 22:52. Ioanna Antonopoulos placed 137th in 23:38 for Delaware, while Liz Paul was 145th in 23:31 and Jessica Leitsch finished 160th in 23:47.
The Delaware men were paced by Kevin Kemmerle, who finished the eight-kilometer course in 26:53 to finish in 200th place. Pat Wilcox came in 210th in 27:00, while Matt O’Brian was 215th in 27:04. Mike Ward finished 244th in 27:46, while Alex Gambogi placed 262nd in 28:14.
Frances Koons of Villanova took the women’s race in 20:16, while fellow Wildcat Robert Curtis won the men’s race in 23:53.
Both Delaware teams return to action on Saturday, October 14 when they host the Delaware Invitational #2 at White Clay Creek State Park. The men’s meet will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the women’s meet will start at 11:15 a.m.
