NEWARK, DE --- University of Delaware junior P.J. Meany captured the overall individual title for the second straight week as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed second at the Delaware Invitational Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.
Meany (Salesianum/Hockessin, DE), who was the winner of the season-opening UNC Wilmington Seahawk Classic last Friday and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Runner of the Week, covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:10.40 to win by over 31 seconds. The individual victory was the fourth of Meany’s career at Delaware.
The University of Pennsylvania captured both the men’s and women’s team titles. The Penn men totalled 25 points to best second place Delaware (31). Hofstra was third at 110 followed by Richard Stockton State (138), Coppin State (147), Morgan State (158), Delaware State (163), and Lincoln (211). On the women’s side, Penn posted a score of 25 to take the team title, outdistancing runner-up Delaware with 59 points. Hofstra was third with 65 followed by Towson (83), Delaware State (160), Richard Stockton State (188), Morgan State (213), Lincoln (243), and Coppin State (252).
Hofstra’s Mary Sullivan won the women’s five-kilometer race with a course record 18:22.10, edging Penn’s Stacy Kim (18:30.7) and Claire Kim (18:33.6).
Delaware sophomore Colleen O’Brien (North Hunterdon/Lebanon, NJ) led the Blue Hens for the seventh straight meet as she placed fourth overall in a time of 18:42.8. The Hens placed four runners in the top 20 as freshman Julia Somers was eighth (19:21.4), freshman Jessica Leitsch was 11th (19:33.7), and Sari Weissbard placed 16th (20:18.10).
In addition to Meany’s first place finish for the UD men, Delaware put nine other runners in the top 20. Brad Dodson was fourth ( 27:09.2), Sam MacKenzie placed seventh (27:20.2), Kyle Schmid was eighth (27:23.6), Tyler Mayforth was 11th (27:48.7), Ryan Ward was 12th (27:52.5), Kevin DuPrey placed 15th (28:23.2), Mike Hazeltine was 17th (28:29.5), Matt Bryden was 19th (28:51.8), and Jeremy Lambert placed 20th ( 28:52.1).
