O'Brien Places Third To Lead Delaware Women To Fourth-Place Finish At Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships

WILMINGTON, NC -- The University of Delaware men’s team finished fourth with 107 points while the women were also fourth with 122 points as the Blue Hens competed in the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships held Saturday morning at UNC Wilmington’s recreational fields.

William & Mary won the men’s title for the sixth straight season and the 13th in the last 15 years with 26 points, ahead of James Madison (46), Georgia State (93), and Delaware, which finished fourth for the second straight year. Virginia Commonwealth was fifth with 111 points, followed by Hofstra (191), Northeastern (213), UNC Wilmington (229), and George Mason (250).

The Tribe women completed the sweep by winning their third consecutive crown with 35 points, finishing ahead of James Madison (46), Georgia State (116), and the Blue Hens, who improved one spot in the standings from last year. Northeastern placed fifth with 163 points, followed by Towson (163), Hofstra (163), UNC Wilmington (197), Virginia Commonwealth (205), and George Mason (318).

Sophomore Colleen O’Brien led the Delaware women by crossing the finish line in 21:24.74 to finish third for the second straight year, while Julia Somers was 14th in 22:38.03 and Jessica Leitsch placed 35th in 23:52.19. Sari Weissbard finished 43rd in 24:11.23, Renee Gresh came in 45th in 24:13.77, and Liz Paul was 46th in 24:15.46.

Allison Behrle placed 48th in 24:18.69, Brooke MaGuire finished 52nd in 24:24.26, and Colleen Reid was 71st in 25:05.40. Brenda Greene came in 74th in 25:12.39, while Leslie Wason finished 83rd in 25:40.91.

Shannon Saunders of James Madison won the six-kilometer race in 21:04.05, followed by Mary Sullivan of Hofstra in 21:11.82 and O’Brien.

Junior P.J. Meany finished eighth for the Blue Hens by covering the eight-kilomter course in 25:11.08, while Sam MacKenzie placed 24th in 26:13.29. Tyler Mayforth came in 30th in 26:29.83, Mike Ward was 31st in 26:31.70, and Brad Dodson finished 33rd in 26:33.53.

Kyle Schmid placed 38th in 26:46.74, while Greg Cantwell came in 47th in 27:15.50 and Tim Brock was 51st in 27:22.75. Eugene McAuliffe finished 63rd in 27:49.56, just ahead of Mike Roth, who placed 64th in 27:51.44.

Ian Fitzgerald of William & Mary won the men’s race in 24:31.53, ahead of Charles Moran of James Madison in 24:35.87 and Allen Carr of James Madison in 24:37.62.

Both Delaware teams return to action on November 12 when the Blue Hens compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals hosted by Lehigh University.
