Freshman O'Brien Leads UD Women Harriers to Eighth Place Finish at Great American Festival

CARY, NC --- P.J. Meany (right) led the Blue Hen men for the third straight meet and freshman Colleen O'Brien was the top finisher for the University of Delaware women at the Great American Cross Country Festival Friday afternoon at the SAS Soccer Park.

The Delaware men placed fifth in the team standings in the University Race as Meany (Salesianum/Hockessin, DE) placed eighth overall with a time of 26:12.34 over the eight-kilometer course. The Blue Hen women placed eighth in the University Race as O'Brien (North Hunterdon/Lebanon, NJ) ran to a 10th place time of 19:02.44 over the six-kilometer course.

Jacksonville State captured the mens' team title with 65 points followed by East Carolina (97), Albany (121), Pittsburgh (122), and Delaware (127) in the 16-team field. Josephat Waweru of Jacksonville State won the race with a time of 25:02.38.

Also for the Delaware men, Tim Vitez was 22nd (27:03.14), Matt Harrell placed 27th (27:11.82), Kevin DuPrey was 32nd (27:20.74), Peter Kane was 38th (27:29.04), Kyle Schmid placed 42nd (27:37.40), Mike Zeberkiewicz finished 56th (28:04.75), and Dan Frey was 66th (28:35.47).

In the women's University race, High Point took the team title with 65 points followed by Liberty (82), Allegheny (85), Florida Atlantic (107), and Albany (117) in the 13-team field. Delaware picked up 221 points. High Point's Jemisa Hess won the race in a time of 18:09.38.

Also for Delaware, Toni Riggi was 54th (20:41.58), Allison Behrle placed 57th (20:53.54), Brenda Greene placed 59th (20:53.54), Ashley Olsen was 61st (20:59.97), Leslie Wason was 68th (21:08.39), Christine Dierickx was 85th (21:59.10), Meghan Weaver finished 86th (22:02.09), and Annie Kowtoniuk was 94th (22:53.23).

Open races were also held for both the men and women. Delaware's top finishers were Tyler Mayforth (20th, 27:35.10) for the men and Stef Gordon (20th, 21:56.87) for the women.

Both Delaware teams will return to action Oct. 16 when they host the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
