NEWARK, DE -- Both the University of
Delaware men's and women's cross country teams dominated the
action by taking first place team finishes at the Delaware
Invitational Saturday at White Clay Creek State
Park.
The Delaware men, led by individual
champion Mike DiGennaro, won the seven-team meet with
34 points, outdistancing Navy (50), Richmond (93), and
Stockton State (105).
The Blue Hen women placed eight runners
in the top 10 to win their four-team meet with 22 points,
outdistancing Old Dominion (50), Delaware State (66), and
Stockton (114).
Both Delaware teams have finished no
lower than fourth in any meet this season.
DiGennaro, a senior from Essex, MA
(Hamilton-Wenham), led the Hens for the second time this
season as he covered the 8,000 meter course in 27:12,
outkicking Richmond's Ed Moran (27:25) for the
title.
Also for the Hens, Robb Munro
(Sidney, NY/Sidney Central) placed fourth in 27:32, freshman
Matt Swierzbinski (Caesar Rodney HS) was sixth in
27:53, freshman Pat Boettcher (William Penn HS) was
ninth in 28:01, and Peter Kelly (Pine City, NY/Elmira
Southside) was 10th in 28:02.
In the women's race, Old Dominion's Julie
Spolidoro won individual honors with a time of 18:26 over
5,000 meters, but it was all Delaware after that.
Delaware senior Caron Marra
(Newark HS) led the Hens for the fourth straight time this
season, finishing second in a time of 19:32.
Also for the Hens, Aimee Alexander
(Stormville, NY/Carmel) was third in 19:34; Jenn
Krisch (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) was fourth in 19:37;
freshman Krista Kugler (A.I. duPont HS) was sixth in
20:24; Jae Mentzer (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin) was
seventh in 20:26; Monica Marchetta (Milton,
MA/Milton) was eighth in 20:42; Shauna Hughes
(Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) was ninth in 20:55; and Jamie
Gelb (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) was 10th in
20:58.
