WORCESTER, MA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team picked up one third place finish, two sixth place finishes, and one seventh place showing on the way to a seventh place team finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens placed third in the Novice Eights race, sixth in both the Varsity Fours and Varsity Eights races, and seventh in the Second Varsity Eights competition, improving upon a 10th place team finish of a year ago.
Bucknell won the team title with 72 points, Buffalo, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island tied for second with 56 points, Colgate was fifth (48) followed by Marist (44), Delaware (35), Villanova (24), and Holy Cross (7).
Delaware’s Novice Eights crew, which captured the Colonial Athletic Association title earlier this season, raced to a third place finish as the team of coxswain Avery Griffin, Mary Grace Maggiano, Liz Cretekos, Alexx DeLorme, Jess Brooks, Regine Adrien, Brittany Hayes, Arielle Katz, and Kialeen Hay posted a time of 7:0482. Buffalo won the race in 7:01.73 while Villanova was second in 7:03.11.
The Varsity Fours team of coxswain Callie Tegan, Betsy Seeger, Emily Canniff, Lily Chavarriaga, and Catherine Hansen placed third in its heat with a time of 8:16.63 to advance to the finals where the Blue Hens placed sixth overall with a time of 8:36.9. Bucknell won that race with a time of 7:35.81 followed by Colgate, Buffalo, Rhode Island A, and Rhode Island B.
The Delaware Varsity Eight crew of coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Laura Beaufort, Lisa Ferrara, Elizabeth Carey, Melanie Turner, Christina Stanley, Justine Strausser, Nikki Jackowsky, and Lisa Medina placed fourth in its heat with a time of 6:55.52 to advance to the petite (consolation) final. The Hens then placed second in the petite final with a time of 7:14.8 for an overall sixth place finish. Villanova won the petite final with a time of 6:50.12. Delaware led Villanova throughout the first 1,750 meters of the race heading into the sprint but the Wildcats caught the Hens over the last 150 meters to win the race when the UD boat was damaged and lost a seat.
The Second Varsity Eights boat placed the fourth in its heat with a time of 7:18.7 to advance to the petite finals. In the petite finals, Delaware’s crew of coxswain Cami Off, Katie Broullire, Lana Rivers, Jenn Boutin, Rachel Thomas, Maria Bellumori, Nicolette Lotrionte, Katie Gooding, and Lynn Hamski won with a time of 7:19.22 to finish seventh overall.
