PHILADELPHIA -- Led by a first place finish by the Novice Eights crew, the University of Delaware women’s rowing squad placed second at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships/Kerr Cup hosted by Drexel Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
The Blue Hens, who also placed second in the Second Varsity Eights, third in the Varsity Eights and Novice Fours, and fourth in the Varsity Fours, earned 46 points to place second in the team standings. George Mason won the title with 52 points while Drexel was third with 36 points. VCU was fourth followed by Old Dominion and UNC Wilmington.
Delaware has never finished lower than second at the CAA championships, winning titles in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006 and finishing second in 2005.
The Blue Hens were led by the Novice Eights team of coxswain Avery Griffin, Mary Grace Maggiano, Liz Cretekos, Alexx DeLorme (at right), Jess Brooks, Regine Adrien, Brittany Hayes, Arielle Katz, and Kialeen Hay, which captured first place with a time of 6:54.59. William & Mary was second followed by George Mason.
The Second Varsity Eights boat of coxswain Cami Off, Katie Broullire, Lana Rivers, Jenn Boutin, Rachel Thomas, Maria Bellumori, Nicolette Lotrionte, Katie Gooding, and Lynn Hamski placed second in its race with a time of 6:55.14 as George Mason captured the competition with a time of 6:49.50. Drexel placed third.
The Varsity Eights crew of coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Laura Beaufort, Lisa Ferrara, Elizabeth Carey, Melanie Turner, Christina Stanley, Justine Strausser, Nikki Jackowsky, and Lisa Medina placed third with a time of 6:42.44. Drexel won the race in a time of 6:30.24 followed by George Mason, Delaware, William & Mary, and VCU.
The Novice Fours crew of coxswain Amanda Burton, Maureen Reardon, Hillary Lamdin, Laura Anglim, and Erin Venturato placed third with a time of 7:03.84. Old Dominion won with a time of 6:42 followed by VCU, Delaware, and UNC Wilmington.
The UD Varsity Fours team of coxswain Callie Tegan, Betsy Seeger, Emily Canniff, Lily Chavarriaga, and Catherine Hansen finished fourth in a time of 7:38.12. George Mason won the race in a time of 7:07.90 followed by William & Mary, Old Dominion, Delaware, VCU, and UNC Wilmington.
The Blue Hens will continue action May 5-6 at the ECAC Metro Championships at Worcester, MA.
