Delaware Women's Rowing Competes in Four Races at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team competed at the Murphy Cup Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River but did not advance any of its four boats to Sunday’s finals.

Delaware placed second in its heat of the Varsity Fours, was third in its heat of the Second Varsity Eights, and fourth in both the Novice Eights and Varsity Eights heats, but just barely missed advancing to the finals in each race.

The Varsity Fours had the Hens’ best finish of the day as the team of coxswain Callie Tegan (at right), Emily Canniff, Lynn Hamski, Katie Gooding, and Nicolette Lotrionte was second in the heat with a time of 8:17.6. Bucknell won the race in 7:54.9. The winner of each heat and the next two fastest times advanced but the Hens barely missed and took a 12th place finish.

In the Second Varsity Eights heat, Delaware’s team of coxswain Alison Harrington, Justine Strausser, Nikki Jackowsky, Katie Broullire, Lindsey Wood, Lily Chavarriaga, Rachel Thomas, Kristen Cannatelli, and Lana Rivers was third in 7:28.6. Navy won the heat with a time of 7:03.3 while Saint Joseph’s was second in 7:12.3. The top two teams advanced to the finals.

In the Novice Eights heat, Delaware’s team of coxswain Amanda Burton, Lisa Ferrara, Candace Quinn, Taima McCartney, Catherine Hansen, Liz Clark, Sara Wetstone, Lisa Medina, Kiersten Joesten placed fourth in a time of 7:47.1. Navy won with a time of 7:16.8 followed by Villanova (7:20.1) and American (7:38.3). The top two teams advanced to the finals.

In the Varsity Eights, Delaware placed fourth in its heat with a time of 7:12.1 behind winner Temple (6:56.3), Villanova (6:57.6), and Lehigh (7:05.6). The Blue Hen team consisted of coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Melanie Turner, Lane Kohl, Christina Stanley, Laura Beaufort, Elizabeth Carey, Jess Kostick, Jenn Boutin, and Cathy Savarese. The top two teams advanced to the finals.

Novice Eights Heat: 1. Navy - 7:16.8; 2. Villanova - 7:20.1; 3. American - 7:38.3; 4. Delaware - 7:47.1 (Amanda Burton, Lisa Ferrara, Candace Quinn, Taima McCartney, Catherine Hansen, Liz Clark, Sara Wetstone, Lisa Medina, Kiersten Joesten).

Second Varsity Eights Heat: 1. Navy - 7:03.3; 2. Saint Joseph’s - 7:12.3; 3. Delaware - 7:28.6 (Alison Harrington, Justine Strausser, Nikki Jackowsky, Katie Broullire, Lindsey Wood, Lily Chavarriaga, Rachel Thomas, Kristen Cannatelli, Lana Rivers); 4. Army - 7:31.8; 5. Skidmore - 7;52.1; 6. Lehigh - 8:03.9.

Varsity Eights Heat: 1. Temple - 6:56.3; 2. Villanova - 6:57.6; 3. Lehigh - 7:05.6; 4. Delaware - 7:12.1 (Kenna Plangemann, Melanie Turner, Lane Kohl, Christina Stanley, Laura Beaufort, Elizabeth Carey, Jess Kostick, Jenn Boutin, Cathy Savarese); 5. Army - 7:15.5.
