PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team captured its fourth unofficial Colonial Athletic Association team title in five years as the Blue Hens won the Kerr Cup/CAA championships Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River.

Delaware captured the 2,000 meter Varsity Eights race, placed second in the Varsity Eights, third in the Novice Eights, and fifth in the Varsity Fours to claim the team title with 51 points. The Hens also captured the titles in 2002, 2003, and 2004 before placing second last season. The meet was held in a steady rain with 10 mile per hour winds.

Drexel was second with 42 points followed by George Mason (37), William & Mary (18), Virginia Commonwealth (12), and Old Dominion (6). The title is an unofficial one as the CAA does not yet sponsor women’s rowing as a championship sport and some of the teams compete at the club level.

The UD Varsity Eights boat of coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Lane Kohl, Elizabeth Carey, Laura Beaufort, Christina Stanley, Jess Kostick, Justine Strausser, Cathy Savarese and Nikki Jackowsky led the Blue Hens by winning its race with a time of 7:03.9. George Mason was second in 7:11.9 followed by Drexel (7:15.7), William & Mary (7:22.2), and Virginia Commonwealth (7:52.3).

The Delaware Second Varsity Eights boat of coxswain Alison Harrington, Katie Broullire, Rachel Thomas, Jenn Boutin, Lisa Ferrara, Lily Chavarriaga, Lynn Hamski, Kristen Cannatelli and Lana Rivers finished second in its race with a time of 7:25.4. Drexel won the race with a time of 7:14.4.

Delaware’s Novice Eights team of coxswain Amanda Burton, Candace Quinn, Liz Clark, Kiersten Joesten, Catherine Hansen, Sara Wetstone, Lisa Medina, Katie Gooding, and Nicolette Lotrionte placed third with a time of 7:24.7. George Mason “A” won with a time of 7:11.2 followed by George Mason “B” (7:21.3), Delaware, Drexel (7:29.3), and William & Mary (7:35.6).

The Blue Hen Varsity Fours boat of coxswain Callie Tegan, Maria Bellumori, Taima McCartney, Jamie Schoenewald and Cami Off placed fifth in its race with a time of 8:27.7. Old Dominion won the race in 7:54.8 followed by George Mason (7:58.4), Virginia Commonwealth “A” (8:01.7), Virginia Commonwealth “B” (8:24.2), and Delaware.
