Second Varsity Eights Advances to Semifinals to Lead Delaware Rowers at Season-Ending Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware Second Varsity Eights boat advanced to the semifinals and the Varsity Eights boat advanced to the repechage round to highlight performances by the Blue Hen women’s rowing team at the nnual Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River Friday and Saturday.

The event closed out the 2006 season for the Blue Hens, who earlier this year captured the unofficial Colonial Athletic Association team title for the fourth time in the last five years.

The Blue Hens competed in four events at Dad Vail. The Second Varsity Eights team placed third in its heat and sixth in the semifinals, the Varsity Eights team placed third in its heat and third in the repechage (second) round, the Novice Eights boat placed fourth in its heat, and the Varsity Fours team placed sixth in its heat.

The Second Varsity Eights team of coxswain Alison Harrington, Katie Broullire, Rachel Thomas, Jenn Boutin, Lisa Ferrara, Lily Chavarriaga, Nikki Jackowsky, Kristen Cannatelli, and Lana Rivers placed third in its heat in a time of 7:24.24 behind winner Vermont and Fordham to advance to the semifinals. The Blue Hens then placed sixth in the semifinals with a time of 7:12.00. Buffalo won the semifinals followed by Vermont, Colgate, Eastern Michigan, and Drake.

The Varsity Eights boat of coxswain Kenna Plangemann, Lane Kohl, Elizabeth Carey, Laura Beaufort, Christina Stanley, Jess Kostick, Melanie Turner, Cathy Savarese, and Justine Strausser finished third in its heat with a time of 7:10.92 behind winner Massachusetts and runner-up Santa Barbara. The team advanced to the second (repechage) round and placed third with a time of 7:12.59 behind winner Fordham and Long Beach State.

The Varsity Fours team of coxswain Callie Tegan, Emily Canniff, Lynn Hamski, Betsy Seeger, and Maria Bellumori placed sixth in its heat with a time of 8:13.01. Penn State won in a time of 7:29.31 followed by West Virginia, Vermont, New York University, Wheaton, and Delaware.

The Novice Eights team of coxswain Amanda Burton, Liz Clark, Kiersten Joesten, Lisa Medina, Candace Quinn, Catherine Hansen, Sara Wetstone, Nicolette Lotrionte, and Katie Gooding placed fourth in its heat with a time of 7:39.15. Massachusetts won the heat in 7:12.12 followed by Bucknell, Fordham, and Delaware.
