Rowers Advance Two Crews to Petite Finals
at Knecht Cup

-- The University of Delaware Novice
Eights and Second Varsity Eights rowing
teams both advanced to Sunday's petite
finals competition after their
performances Saturday at the Knecht Cup on
the Cooper River.
The Blue
Hens competed in five events overall with
the Novice Eights placing second in their
preliminary heat and third in the
semifinals to advance and the Second
Varsity Eights team placing fourth in
their heat to advance. The Second Varsity
Fours placed fourth in their heat, the
Varsity Fours placed fourth in their heat,
and the Varsity Eights crew placed fifth
in their heat but those teams did not
advance.
The petite
finals, which are considered the
consolation finals, will be held Sunday
morning. The championship finals will also
be held Sunday.
The Novice
Eights team of Cami Off, Ashley Sparano,
Justine Strausser, Stephanie Hendrixson,
Kristen Cannatelli, Meghan Doletzky,
Salena Klass, Lauren Taylor, and Lana
Rivers rowed to a time of 8:56.5 to place
fourth in their heat, advancing them to
the petite finals. Connecticut won the
heat with a time of 8:27.6 followed by New
Hampshire (8:32.7), Rhode Island (8:48.8),
and Delaware.
The Second
Varsity Eights group of Alison Harrington
(right), Liz Martin, Nikki Jackowsky,
Katie Broullire, Cathy Savarese, Jamie
Schoenewald, Nicky Bradley, Stephanie
Miller, and Jenn Boutin placed second in
their preliminary heat with a time of
8:37.6 to advance to the semifinals.
Buffalo won the heat in a time of 8:16.1
while West Virginia was third (9:10.3)
followed by New Hampshire (9:18.2) and
Pittsburgh (9:28.2). In the semifinals,
the Blue Hens placed third with a time of
8:13.9. George Washington won the
semifinal race in 7:49.0 followed by
Buffalo (7:50.9), Delaware, Villanova
(8:23.3), and Boston College (8:35.8).
Delaware's
Varsity Eights team of Kenna Plangemann,
Lyra Sawzin, Lane Kohl, Maureen Gillen,
Melanie Turner, Laura Beaufort, Jess
Kostick, Christina Stanley, and Emily
McElwain placed fifth in their heat with a
time of 8:31.5, missing a spot in the
finals by one place. Connecticut won the
heat in 7:53.1 followed by Marist
(7:55.9), George Washington (7:59.1), West
Virginia (8:00.2), Delaware, and Seton
Hall (9:10.4).
The Blue
Hen Varsity Fours team of Jill Goldman,
Maria Bellumori, Lynn Hamski, Lindsey
Wood, and Rachel Thomas placed fourth in
their heat with a time of 9:31.2, placing
behind winner Connecticut (8:53.3),
Georgetown (8:58.4), Lehigh (9:01.6), and
Colgate (9:09.1), and ahead of fifth place
Loyola (10:31.8).
The
Delaware Second Varsity Fours team of
Callie Tegan, Laura Belfi, Lily
Chavarriaga, Carly Gonzalez, Susan Carbine
placed fourth in their heat with a time of
10:03.5, placing behind winner Kansas
(9:08.6), Lehigh (9:10.2), and New
Hampshire (9:10.6), and ahead of Fordham
(10:09.1).
