 Blue Hens Win Varsity Fours at Eastern Championships

CHERRY HILL, NJ -- The University of Delaware's Varsity Fours team of Carolyn Serey, Denise Burke, Dana Lohr, Laura Muto, and Emily McElwain captured first place to highlight Blue Hen performances at the Eastern College Athletic Association Rowing Championships Sunday on the Cooper River.

The meet included some of the top teams in the East. Of Delaware's other three crews, the Junior Varsity/Second Eights placed second overall, the Novice Eights placed fifth, and the Varsity Eights placed 10th overall.

The Blue Hens placed fifth in the team standings with 43 points, trailing Massachusetts (71), Rhode Island (58), Buffalo (55), and West Virginia (55). Villanova with sixth with 41 points followed by Fordham (35), Saint Joseph's (35), Army (28), and Colgate (26).

The Varsity Fours rowed to a time of 8:06.8 to outdistance Massachusetts (8:09.4). Buffalo was third followed by Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's, and Villanova.

The Second Eights squad of Nicole Lombardi, Elizabeth Harris, Lisa Hardy, Jess Colpo, Alison Conway, Andrea Placke, Janice Brown, Laura McDonald, and Elizabeth McGarry placed second overall with a time of 7:19.2, falling to champion Massachusetts, which posted a time of 7:09.5. West Virginia was third followed by Buffalo, Rhode Island, and Colgate.

The Novice Eights crew of Sarah Mazurkevich, Jenna Darrenkamp, Leslie Forsyth, Katherine Reiner, Val Schuster, Cindy Dudzinski, Kate Sianni, Lane Kohl and Becca Bauer placed fifth with a time of 7:34.8. Saint Joseph's won the race in a time of 7:11.4 followed by Villanova, Colgate, Massachusetts, Delaware, and West Virginia.

The Hens' Varsity Heavyweight Eights was the only UD squad that did not advance to the finals. Delaware's team of Alli Garwood, Megan Batykefer, Elizabeth McInturff, Kylie Campbell, Betsy Ferry, Danah O'Connor, Lissa Kutz, Dawn Hussnatter, and Leanna Ferrand placed fourth in the Petite final to place 10th overall. Army won the Petite final with a time of 7:13.3 to earn a seventh place finish. Saint Joseph's was eighth followed by Colgate and Delaware.

The meet concluded the 2003 season for the Blue Hens.
