 Blue Hens Place Fourth at Dad Vail; Capture Lightweight Eights Title

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team capped a successful weekend by placing fourth in the team standings at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia Saturday and placing second at the ECAC Metro-Avaya Regatta Sunday at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, NJ.

At the Dad Vail Regatta, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious rowing regattas, Villanova captured the women's point title with 21 points followed by Massachusetts and Boston College with 20 points, and Delaware fourth with 16 points. A total of 47 teams competed. Delaware, which won the team title in 2001, placed third in 1999 and second in 2000.

At the ECAC Metro-Avaya Regatta Sunday, Massachusetts took the women's team title with 79 points while Delaware was second with 61 points and Villanova was third with 60 points.

Highlighting the Dad Vail for Delaware was the Lightweight Varsity Eights team that won the title for the second straight year. Delaware's team of Dana Hammond, Denise Burke, Fay Schmid, Laura Muto, Lisa Hardy, Susan Krause, Tory Yanakos, Stef Lazorick, and Dana Lohr won the finals with a time of 7:08.8. Rhode Island was second at 7:14.0 followed by Villanova, Penn State, Georgia Tech, and Colorado.

Delaware's Varsity Heavyweight Eights team of Alli Garwood, Lauren Heller, Elizabeth McInturff, Lissa Kutz, Dawn Hussnatter, Betsy Ferry, Kylie Campbell, Laura McDonald, and Erin Quimby placed third in the petite final and eighth overall with a time of 6:57.0. Connecticut won the race and was sixth overall with a time of 6:50.6.

Also for the Hens, the Junior Varsity Eights team of Carolyn Serey, Jessica Colpo, Erinn Batykefer, Jessica Ayers, Jen Suminski, Leanna Ferrand, Danah O'Connor, Janice Brown, and Alison Conway placed sixth in the finals with a time of 7:06.6. Boston College took the title with a time of 6:56.8 followed by Massachusetts, Purdue, Saint Joseph's, and Connecticut.

Delaware's Novice Eights team of Stacey Atsaides, Emily McElwain, Kathleen Servis, Lauren Fretz, Hannah Evans, Stefanie Schneider, Meredith Bullamore, Courtney Bull, and Maureen Gillen also placed sixth in the finals with a time of 7:20.3. Purdue won the race with a time of 7:01.2 followed by Saint Joseph's, Central Florida, Boston College, Buffalo, and Delaware.

The Blue Hens also competed in two other events at Dad Vail as the Varsity Heavyweight Fours team of Kat Campagnini, Andrea Placke, Elizabeth McGarry, Elizabeth Harris, and Lyra Sawzin placed third in its heat with a time of 7:32.1 (Indiana won the heat in 7:31.0) and the Varsity Lightweight Fours team of Alexis Klair, Nicole Ferrari, Liz Florin, Lindsay Greco, and Susan Carbine was fifth in its heat with a time of 8:40.3. The University of Georgia won the race in 7:51.4.

At the ECAC Metro-Avaya Regatta Sunday, Delaware was second in the Novice Heavyweight Eights (7:34.2), second in the Varsity Fours (no times available), third in the Junior Varsity Heavyweight Eights (7:45.4), and third in the Varsity Heavyweight Eights (7:15.9).

Delaware's Novice Heavyweight Eights team consisted of Atsaides, McElwain, Servis, Fretz, Evans, Schneider, Bullamore, Bull, and Gillen, the Varsity Fours team consisted of Campagnini, Placke, McGarry, Harris, and Sawzin, the JV Eights team was comprised of Serey, Colpo, Batykefer, Muto, Suminski, Ferrand, O'Connor, Brown, and Conway, and the Varsity Heavyweight Eights team included Garwood, Heller, McInturff, Kutz, Hussnatter, Ferry, Campbell, McDonald, and Quimby.

Fairfield won the Varsity Fours, Massachusetts won the Varsity Eights (6:58.4), St. Joseph's won the Novice Eights (7:32.4), and Massachusetts won the Junior Varsity Eights (7:33.1).
