UD Lightweight Eight Rowers Take First at

Dad Vail Regatta

 

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team's Varsity Lightweight Eight team captured first place and the Novice Heavyweight Eight team placed fourth at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River Saturday afternoon.

The meet concluded the first ever varsity season for the Blue Hen rowing team, which is coached by Amanda Wemple.

The Varsity Lightweight Eight team of Jenn O'Keefe, Kristin Vander Els, Gail Orem, Danielle Stevens, Rebecca Todd, Erica Chisholm, Nicole Belsole, Stacie Konrad, and Whitney McCormick rowed to a time of 8:13.2 to win the event, edging runner-up University of Florida by six seconds.

The Novice Heavyweight Eight team of Michelle Peto, Becky Knieriem, Frances O'Brien, Emily Drury, Marnie Merriam, Cathy Visintainer, Heather Bieler, Susan Krause, and Allison Pyne also advanced to the finals, placing fourth in a time of 7:24.05. The University of Toronto won the 35-team event in a time of 7:14.07.

Delaware's Novice Four team of Jordan Chon, Jessica Ayers, Kristin Biermann, Dana Hammond, and Geri Sieracki was third in its heat in a time of 8:09.4 but did not make the finals.

Delaware's Varsity Four team of Nicole Palmer, Amanda Duley, Mo Daley, Courtney Forrester, and Karen Hommer finished fifth in the second round but also did not make the finals.
