Blue Hens Win Three
Events at Sprints
OCCOQUAN, VA -- The University of
Delaware women's rowing team captured three first place
finishes at the Occoquan Sprints Sunday
afternoon.
Delaware captured the Varsity Lightweight
Eight (6:36), the Novice Heavyweight Eight "A" (5:27.1),
and Novice Heavyweight "B" (5:22.0) races and placed fourth
in the Varsity Heavyweight Eight (6:45.2) and fifth in the
Novice Heavyweight Four (7:25.3) events.
Winning the Varsity Lightweight Eight
race for the Blue Hens was the team of Jenn O'Keefe,
Denise Burke, Nicole Belsole, Danielle Stevens, Tory
Yanakos, Laurie Patria, Susan Krause,Nicole Ferrari, and
Whitney McCormick. The team outdistanced Virginia
Tech (6:43.6) and John Hopkins (6:50.3) for the
title.
Winning the Novice Heavyweight Eight A
race for the Hens was the team of Dana Hammond, Jess
Colpo, Jenni Buckley, Lissa Kutz, Lauren Heller, Betsy
Ferry, Vikki Humenik, Lisa Hardy, and Katey
Prosser. The team beat out Mary Washington (5:45.9) and
Pittsburgh (5:54.4) for the title.
The Hens also won the Novice Heavyweight
Eight B race (names unavailable), outdistancing Mary
Washington (5:52.8) and Pittsburgh (5:57.1) for the
title.
Delaware's Varsity Heavyweight Eight team
of Emily Bercaw, Amanda Duley, Gail Orem, Gayle Dornan,
Karen Hommer, Jess Ayers, Courtney Levering, Bizzy
Schultz, and Heather Bieler was fourth behind
winner Johns Hopkins (6:38.5), George Mason, and Pittsburgh
while the Novice Heavyweight Four team of Allison Haug,
Laura Gordon, Bridget Fairchild, Karina McBride, and
Lindsay Morris was fifth behind winner Pittsburgh
(6:32.3), George Mason, Susquehanna, and Stockton
State.
The team will compete at the Kerr Cup
this Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
