NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware announced the 2007-08 men’s and women’s basketball schedules on Tuesday, as both Blue Hen teams will face multiple squads that competed in postseason play last year.
In addition to the 18-game Colonial Athletic Association schedule, the Delaware men’s team will play 11 non-conference games, including three at home. The Blue Hen women have 15 games scheduled at the Bob Carpenter Center, and could have two more depending on the outcomes of the Preseason WNIT in which the Blue Hens are participating.
The Delaware women’s team, coming off a record-setting 26-6 season in which the Blue Hens received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, could face as many as eight teams that also competed in the Big Dance a year ago and three that participated in the Women’s Postseason NIT. Delaware, led by 12-year head coach Tina Martin (at right), opens the season at home against fellow NCAA Tournament participant Delaware State on Nov. 9 in the first round of the WNIT, and could face perennial power Maryland in the second round of the tournament. The Blue Hens are guaranteed three games in the WNIT but will play four if they win their first three contests.
Following the WNIT the Blue Hens host Boston College on Nov. 20 before participating in the Panera Bread Challenge on Nov. 23-24 hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga. Delaware faces Louisville, which advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, in the first game, and will take on either the host Mocs, who also appeared in the Big Dance, or Murray State, which played in the WNIT, in the second game.
The Blue Hens return home to host La Salle (Nov. 28), Maryland-Eastern Shore (Dec. 6), and Quinnipiac (Dec. 18) before welcoming NCAA Tournament second round participant Bowlling Green to the Carpenter Center on Dec. 21. Delaware wraps up its non-conference slate at the Blue Sky Classic on Dec. 29-30 hosted by Dartmouth. The Blue Hens will face Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama in the first round, and in the second will either face the host Big Green, who appeared in the WNIT last season, or Marquette, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware opens CAA action at George Mason on Jan. 6 before hosting Drexel on Jan. 10 in its conference home opener. The Blue Hens host league defending champion Old Dominion at the BCC on Jan. 27 and WNIT quarterfinalist Hofstra on Feb. 17, and travel to the Pride on Jan. 31 and to NCAA Tournament participant James Madison on Feb. 24. The Blue Hens, led by second year head coach Monté Ross, open their season on Nov. 11 at Marist, which advanced to the second round of the NIT a year ago. After travelling to Rider on Nov. 17, Delaware hosts Hampton in its home opener on Nov. 27.
After a visit to Iona on Nov. 30, the Blue Hens return home to host Towson in their CAA opener on Dec. 3 and then host 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Albany on Dec. 5. Delaware then plays three straight road games, taking on Ohio University on Dec. 8, NCAA Tournament participant Central Connecticut State on Dec. 16, and NIT participant Vermont on Dec. 19.
The Blue Hens then host former America East rival Boston University on Dec. 22 before travelling to Atlantic Coast Conference power Maryland on Dec. 28. Additionally Delaware will again participate in the O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, as the Blue Hens will play a road game on Feb. 23 against an opponent to be determined.
Following its first CAA road game at William & Mary on Jan. 2, Delaware travels to rival and NIT participant Drexel on Jan. 5. The Blue Hens then return home to host 2006 Final Four participant George Mason on Jan. 9 and 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Old Dominion on Jan. 12. Delaware also hosts Virginia Commonwealth, the defending conference champion which knocked off Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, on Feb. 9, Drexel on Feb. 16, and Hofstra, which competed in the NIT, on Feb. 27.
