NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward Jessica Canady came off the bench to record game highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds and junior guard Jazzmin Walters contributed 10 points as No. 13 ranked Old Dominion raced past cold-shooting Delaware for a 76-37 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Old Dominion (16-3, 7-0, CAA), the 17-time defending CAA champions, jumped out to a 34-14 halftime lead and never looked back in posting its 10th straight victory. Senior forward Megan Pym added eight points and eight rebounds and senior guard T.J. Jordan and freshman guard Jasmine Parker also contributed eight points and five assists each in a balanced effort.
Delaware (4-15, 3-4 CAA), which had a two-game win streak snapped, got 11 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks from sophomore forward Sha'Ron Harrison (at right), but suffered its worst home loss since an 89-47 setback to Maine Jan. 18, 1997. Harrison posted her first career double-double for the Blue Hens, who also got seven points off the bench from sophomore guard Corinthia Benison and six points and six rebounds from sophomore forward Ariene Jenkins.
The Blue Hens, who played their third Top 25 team this season, shot their lowest field goal percentage in school history (20.3 percent) and scored their lowest point total since moving to the BCC during the 1992-93 season. Their previous low was a 42-point effort in a setback to St. John’s on March 17, 2005.
"We tried to give them a fight in the first half, but we missed way too many layups and way too many free throws," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team went 12 of 59 from the field and 13 of 29 from the foul line. "We didn't battle like we should have in the second half. My biggest problem is that we let them do whatever they wanted to do in the second half. We didn't deny them anything. We have to be stronger."
Delaware scored the game’s first basket on a layup by Kyle DeHaven just under two minutes into the contest, but Old Dominion scored 21 of the next 25 points and never looked back in posting their fourth straight win over the Blue Hens.
The Monarchs, built a 34-14 lead at halftime, limiting the Blue Hens to 5 of 34 shooting from the field (14.7 percent), and scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to increase the lead to 25 points at 41-16 with 15:52 left.
Canady, who was coming off a career-high 28-point performance off the bench in an 85-51 win over Northeastern Thursday, reached a career-high in rebounds and also hit 7 of 11 shots from the field while also blocking three shots.
