BOSTON -- Freshman guard Vanessa Kabongo (at right) scored 11 points, including two clutch jumpers in the final three minutes, to propel the Delaware women's basketball team to a 57-52 win over Northeastern at Solomon Court on Sunday afternoon.
Senior guard Kyle DeHaven scored a game high 13 points and grabbed eight steals for the Hens (5-16, 4-5 CAA), who snapped a two-game losing streak and won their 12th straight game over the Huskies. Forwards Ariene Jenkins and Sha'Ron Harrison contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Up 50-48 after senior forward Courtney Irving connected on two free throws with 3:32 left in regulation, the Hens stopped Northeastern on two straight possessions and had a chance to take control after the Huskies' Shaleyse Smallwood missed the front end of a one-and-one with three minutes remaining.
On the ensuing possession, the Blue Hens swung the ball around the perimeter but couldn't find an open look. With the shot clock winding down, Kabongo found herself tightly guarded on the right wing with little room to make a move. So she stepped back and buried a fadeaway three-pointer with a hand in her face just as the shot clock sounded, putting UD up 53-48 at the 2:33 mark.
NU's Jasmine Crew answered with a bucket just over a minute later, but Kabongo wouldn't let the Huskies get any closer. On Delaware's next trip down the floor, the freshman from Toronto took a feed from Irving and drained a 15-footer from the left baseline with just one minute left. The Huskies trimmed the lead to three and had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Lucia Pablos's three-point try from the corner rimmed out.
Jenkins gathered the rebound and hit a pair of free throws to ice the game.
With eight steals on the day, DeHaven moved past Old Dominion legend Mery Andrade for third on the Colonial Athletic Association all-time list with 388 career thefts. DeHaven now has 90 steals on the season and leads the nation with 4.7 steals per game.
UD built a 34-28 halftime lead thanks to its tenacious work on the glass. The Hens outrebounded Northeastern 28-11 in the period, hustling for 18 offensive boards.
The Hens shot a respectable 14-for-35 (.400) from the floor before intermission, but they lost the range in the second half. Delaware went without a field goal (0-for-9) for the first 8:58 of the half, scoring their first seven points of the period at the charity stripe. Remarkably, UD managed to increase its lead to seven during the drought, which Kabongo ended with a jumper at the 11:02 mark.
Jenkins gave the Hens their biggest lead of the night at 45-34 with a lay-up on Delaware's next possession. But the Huskies, who dropped a 67-54 decision at UD just two weeks ago, wouldn't go away this time. They used a 14-3 surge to knot the score at 48 on a scoop shot by Pablos with 4:15 remaining.
Pablos and guard Shaleyse Smallwood netted 10 points apiece to lead Northeastern, which fell to 6-13 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
Delaware head coach Tina Martin was happy with her young Hens, who dominated the boards 40-28 and committed just 13 turnovers.
"We knew (Northeastern) would play us tougher at their place, especially since they just beat Drexel here," she said. "They came to play, and I'm very happy we were able to get a win. "I'm very happy for Vanessa. She stepped up for us and always plays with so much intensity, so much fire. If the rest of the team can catch that fire, we'll become a much better team."
The Blue Hens return to action on Thursday evening, when they host VCU at 7 p.m.
