Delaware 65, UNC Wilmington 59 Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinals March 11, 2004 Blue Hens Lead From Start to Finish to Advance to Semifinals vs. ODU Complete Game Statistics NORFOLK, VA - Junior Tiara Malcom scored 19 points and junior forward Tiffany Young added 11 as the No. 4 seed University of Delaware women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the CAA Tournament for the second consecutive season with a 65-59 win over No. 5 seed UNC Wilmington Thursday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, VA. Freshman Alena Koshansky added 11 points - including three 3-point field goals - for the Hens (19-9) while fellow freshman Tyresa Smith chipped in with nine points and five assist as Delaware won its fifth-straight game and six in its last seven outings. The win also marked Delaware's third over UNC Wilmington this season and extended its win streak over the Seahawks to four. The Hens were eliminated by the Seahawks in the semifinals of the 2002 CAA Tournament. ""I thought our kids played very well. I am proud of them and we held our composure," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "We've grown up a lot over the past seven games this season and we've really matured as a team. These kids have stepped up and taken some great shots." The win gives the Hens 19 on the season and, with a win in the semifinals against No. 1 seed Old Dominion, who downed No. 9 seed William & Mary 82-56 in the nightcap Thursday, will give them their fifth-straight 20-win season. The Monarchs and Hens met in the finals of last year's tournament with Old Dominion edging Delaware, 66-58. UNC Wilmington's Cherie Lea, a first team all-CAA selection this season, gave the Seahawks their only lead of the game (2-0) at 19:06 of the first half before Koshansky hit consecutive three's to give the Hens a 10-4 lead. Delaware built leads of 19-14 and 24-17, never allowing the Seahawks to get closer than two points, and took a 31-24 halftime lead. Malcom led the way with 10 points, followed by five from Young and four from sophomore Amanda Blackstone. Smith scored the first seven points of the second half for the Hens, who opened up a 10-point lead at 48-38 on a three-point field goal by Hayes at 9:29. Delaware's largest lead of the game was 12 following a basket by Young at 8:28 to make the score 51-39. UNC Wilmington cut the lead to six at 60-54 with 1:19 left on free throws from UNCW's Jennifer Kapper, but the Hens hit five of six free throws down the stretch to seal with win. Malcom, a second team all-CAA selection this season, stretched her double-digit point streak to 17 straight games. Additionally, the Hens moved to 18-0 when holding opponents under 60 points.
