Delaware 60, Turkish National Team 56 November 4, 2003   Julie Sailer scored a game-high 19 points for the Blue Hens NEWARK, DE -- Junior guard Julie Sailer scored a game-high 19 points and iced the game with two free throws with three seconds left as the University of Delaware women's basketball team opened its exhibition season with a 60-56 victory over the Turkish National Team at the Bob Carpenter Center Tuesday night. Sailer, the 2002 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and one of three returning starters from last year's squad that went 23-6, shared the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title with Old Dominion and fell to the Monarchs in the league championship game, hit on 6 of 11 shots from the field, connected on 6 of 9 free throws, and also dished out a team-high three assists as the Hens rallied from an early deficit to post the victory. The Hens, coming off four straight 20-win seasons and three straight post-season appearances, will open the 2003-04 season Nov. 21 at home against the University of Richmond. Sailer was the only Blue Hen player in double figures but Tiara Malcom added eight points and 10 rebounds and Tracey Howell chipped in with seven points and 10 boards. Delaware held a 35-29 rebounding advantage and took advantage of 24 turnovers and 29 personal fouls by the Turkish team. "We showed we were very young, but our kids showed confidence when they needed to," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "I thought they did a great job. We threw our freshmen out there and let them get their feet wet." The Turkish National team was led by forward Saziye Ivegin who scored 18 points and nailed four three-pointers, including one with 1:23 left to play that tied the score at 53-53. After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, Delaware rallied and pulled to within 27-26 at halftime as they scored the final six points of the stanza. The Hens regained the lead at 32-31 on a layup by Tiffany Young just three minutes into the second half and held the lead until the final minutes. The Turkish team pulled close several times during the second half, cutting the lead to just one point twice at 37-36 with 13:01 left and at 40-39 with 10:47 remaining. Delaware moved the lead back up to eight points at 51-43 with 3:57 remaining, but again Turkey climbed back as Ivegin hit a three-pointer with 2:19 left to cut the lead to 53-50 and another one 1:06 later to tie the game. But Delaware took over from there as Kristy Gaines hit a jumper and freshman Liz Hayes hit a big three-pointer with 18 seconds left for a 58-53 lead. Turkey's Arzue Ozyigit converted a conventional three-pointer, hitting a layup and following with a three throw, with six seconds left to cut the lead again to 58-56. But Sailer followed with two free throws seconds later to ice the win.
