Delaware 69, Towson 56 February 29, 2004 Koshansky, Malcom Each Hit for 19 Points as Hens Outlast Towson Complete Game Statistics TOWSON, MD -- Junior forward Tiara Malcom and freshman guard Alena Koshansky each scored 19 points and freshman guard Tyresa Smith chipped in with 14 more as the University of Delaware continued its spirited late-season play by pulling away in the second half for a 69-56 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over Towson Sunday afternoon at the Towson Center. Malcom continued her hot hand as she netted double figures for the 15th straight game on six of eight shooting from the field and seven of nine foul shooting despite being limited to 27 minutes with an ankle injury. Koshansky sank a career-high five three-pointers, one shy of the UD school record, on the way to her career-high point total. Delaware won for the fifth time in the last six games to improve to 17-9 (9-8 CAA) heading into Thursday's regular season finale at home vs. second place George Mason. The Hens continued their hot shooting as they connecting on 45.7 percent from the field for the game (21 of 46), including a 55 percent mark (11 of 20) in the second half when they broke open a tie game with a 15-1 run. They also took advantage of 26 turnovers by collecting 20 steals on the afternoon as Amanda Blackstone had six steals and Smith and Koshansky each picked up five. Towson, which lost its fifth straight game and fell for the 15th time in the last 16 outings, dropped to 9-17 (1-15 CAA) on the season. The Tigers suited up just eight players with standout guard and leading scorer Kacy O'Brien (15.2 points per game), who sat out with a knee injury, among the casualties. Center Kelly Robinson led Towson with 18 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out and Brandi Harris added a career-high 16 points to go with six assists and four steals in the losing effort. The Tigers, who lost to Delaware for the ninth straight time, tied a school record with 10 three-pointers, including four by Harris, but were hurt by the turnovers and 30.8 percent shooting from the field (8 of 26) in the opening 20 minutes. Robinson hit just 7 of 17 shots from the field while starting forward Kelli Talbot misfired on all 10 attempts from the field. Delaware jumped out to a 27-21 halftime lead thanks to the play of Koshansky, who recorded 11 of her points and three of her three-pointers in the opening frame. The Hens led by as much as 11 points before Towson held them scoreless for the final 2:45 while getting a layup from Robinson and a three-pointer from Harris. The Blue Hen lead went back up to 11 points early in the second half as a 7-2 run in the first two minutes gave Delaware a 34-23 advantage. But the Tigers stormed back with a15-4 run of their own to knot the score at 38-38 with 13:38 remaining. Harris and Mia Spasowska each sank two three-pointers to highlight the run. But Delaware responded immediately, taking off on a pivotal 15-1 run that put the game away. The Hens held Towson without a field goal for four minutes and 24 seconds to take control. Malcom led the run with eight points while Koshansky chipped in with a three-pointer. Following the run, Towson never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
