straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go
with five blocked shots as the University of Delaware broke
open a close game early in the second half on the way to a
65-52 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball
victory Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Young hit on 7 of 11 shots from the field
and also added six rebounds while Hayes connected on three
three-pointers and also grabbed three steals as the Blue
Hens won their second straight and fourth game in the last
five outings to improve to 13-4, 5-3 CAA. Delaware junior
guard Julie Sailer also added 11 points as the Blue
Hens placed four scorers in double figures and held a
commanding 37-25 advantage on the boards.
Towson, which suffered its eighth
straight loss, fell to 8-9, 0-8 CAA as the Tigers shot just
38.5 percent from the field for the game (15 of 39) and
committed 23 turnovers. Guard Kacy O'Brien put in a big
effort with team-highs of 24 points and eight rebounds,
including hitting 11 of 13 shots from the foul line. Center
Kelly Robinson added 13 points but no other Towson player
had more than six.
"I knew this would be a tough game," said
Delaware head coach Tina Martin of a Towson club that
has already more than doubled last year's win total of three
for the season. They will be a good team in the CAA. I told
our team that I wore my boots tonight to climb the mountain.
We struggled at times but we did a better job in the second
half. We want to stay towards the top of the league
standings. We have nine more games and a lot can
happen."
Delaware has now defeated rival Towson
eight straight times, holding the Tigers under 60 points in
six of those victories. The Blue Hens, among the national
leaders in scoring defense at 54.6 points per game (12th in
NCAA I), are now 13-0 this season when holding an opponent
under 70 points.
The Hens took a slim 30-28 halftime lead
following a sluggish first half that featured five ties.
Towson led most of the final six minutes before Hayes
connected on a three-pointer with 59 seconds left and fed
Malcom for a basket just before the halftime buzzer to put
the Hens up.
It was a strong start in the second half
that put the game away as the Hens took advantage of six
Towson turnovers in the first six minutes of the second half
to pull away. After a layup by O'Brien tied the score at
30-30 and a three-pointer by Mia Spasowska pulled the Tigers
to within one point at 34-33 just over two minutes into the
half, the game belonged to Delaware.
The Hens took off on a decisive 14-0 run
and never looked back, upping the lead to 15 points at 48-33
and leading by double digits the rest of the way. Tracey
Howell started the run with with back-to-back jumpers,
Hayes converted a conventional three-point play off a steal,
and Sailer followed with two free throws during the run.
Hayes then capped the streak with a three-pointer with 14:34
left to play.
