Old Dominion 73, Delaware 62 Colonial Athletic Association Semifinals March 12, 2004 Delaware Rally Falls Short in CAA Semifinal Loss to Monarchs Game Statistics NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware fell behind by 20 points at halftime but made a furious comeback in the final minutes before falling to host Old Dominion 73-62 in the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament semifinals Friday evening at ODU's Constant Convocation Center. The No. 4 seed Blue Hens (19-10), who had a five-game win streak snapped, were knocked out of the tournament by the 12-time defending conference champion Monarch for the second straight season. The Hens, who have advanced to their tournament semifinals six straight years, will now hold out hope for a second straight invitation to the Women's National Invitation Tournament. Those bids will be announced Sunday evening. Sophomore Amanda Blackstone (right) connected on 7 of 10 shots from the field and finished with a career-high 17 points while guard Tyresa Smith added 14 points and six steals for the Blue Hens. Second team All-CAA forward Tiara Malcom was held to nine points and had her streak of 17 straight games scoring in double figures snapped. Top seed Old Dominion will face No. 2 George Mason in Saturday's championship game at 12 noon with the winner earning the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. George Mason was a 73-59 semifinal winner over Virginia Commonwealth earlier Friday night behind a 40-point performance from guard Jen Derevjanik. Old Dominion, which shot 57.8 percent from the field (26 of 45) for the game, got a balanced effort as Myriah Spence scored a game-high 18 points with three three-pointers, Monique Coker added 11 points and eight rebounds, Max Nhassengo chipped in with 10 points and eight steals, and Lawona Davis and Shareese Grant each added nine points. Grant also collected a game-high six assists. This one looked like it would be over at halftime as hot-shooting Old Dominion connected on 17 of 29 first half shots (58.6 percent) to jump out to a 42-22 halftime advantage. After Blackstone scored Delaware's first basket to tie the game at 2-2 in the first minute, Old Dominion followed with a 15-3 run that gave the Monarchs a 17-5 lead with 14:06 left in the stanza. Coker and Spence each scored five points in the run. Delaware never got the lead closer than 10 points the rest of the half. Old Dominion upped the lead to 23 points early in the second half as a Shantel Wilson jumper gave the Monarchs a 58-35 lead with 10:55 remaining. But Delaware never gave in and clawed its way back into the game. An 11-3 run got the Hens right back into the game as Tiffany Young scored four points, Alena Koshansky nailed a three-pointer, and Malcom converted four straight free throws to cut the lead to 68-62 with 1:34 left. But the Monarchs clamped down from there as Davis and Spence each hit two free throws in a span of 21 seconds and Grant hit another one to ice the victory. The Hens did not convert a field goal in the final 2:23.
