Buzzer as McCall Follows Missed Shot

DE -- Freshman Shirley McCall rebounded a missed shot
and followed with a layup just before the final buzzer
sounded as James Madison recorded a 62-61 Colonial Athletic
Association women's basketball victory over host University
of Delaware Thursday night, extending the Blue Hens' losing
streak to four games.
James Madison, which snapped a two-game
losing streak, rallied from a six-point deficit with just
under two minutes left to play as the Dukes hit two big
three-pointers and took advantage of several missed free
throws by Delaware. JMU,which completed the series sweep
over Delaware, improved to 9-14 (4-8 CAA) as Lesley
Dickinson scored 19 points and pulled eight rebounds,
Meredith Alexis added 14 points, and Jody LeRose chipped in
with 13 points.
Delaware, which suffered its fourth
straight setback, fell to 13-8 (5-7CAA) despite shooting 50
percent (22 of 44) from the field. The Hens got 15 points
from Tiara Malcom, her 10th straight double-figure
scoring outing, Tiffany Young added 12 points and
seven rebounds, and Delaware got 10 more points off the
bench from Tyresa Smith. The Hens, who have now lost
four straight for the first time since Feb. 1998 when they
were members of America East, are now 0-7 this season when
opponents score more than 60 points.
James Madison led 30-26 at halftime and
took its biggest lead 26 seconds into the second half on a
three-pointer by Dickinson to go up 33-26. But Delaware,
which converted four three-point plays in the second stanza,
chipped away at the lead and finally tied the game at 36-36
with 15:12 remaining.
The half featured six more ties before
Hens broke a 50-50 deadlock on a jumper by Smith with 6:09
remaining. The Hens built that lead to as much as seven
points at 57-50 with 3:42 remaining and still led by six
points at 60-54 when Young connected on a jumper with 1:51
remaining.
But James Madison rallied as Dickinson
nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 60-57 and LeRose
hit another trey less than a minute later to knot the score
at 60-60, the eighth tie of the half, with 41 seconds
left.
Delaware freshman guard Liz Hayes
missed the front end of a two-shot foul with 26 seconds
left, one of four missed free throws in the final 2:31 by
the Hens, but hit the second shot to give the Hens the 61-60
lead.
The Dukes got one more possession but
LeRose's three-pointer with eight seconds left was blocked
out of bounds by Delaware's Amanda Blackstone.
Dickinson then took the inbounds pass and her jumper from
the foul line was off the mark. But McCall was there to
gather in the rebound and layed the ball in just before the
buzzer to lift the Dukes to the win.
