FAIRFAX, VA -- Junior tri-captain
Tiara Malcom scored a career-high 31 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds for Delaware but Laura Kooij's six
three-point field goals proved too much to overcome as the
University of Delaware fell to George Mason, 71-64, in
women's basketball conference action Thursday night at the
Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

Tiara
Malcom scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed
11 rebounds in the loss.
|
Kooij finished with 19 points on the
evening while Susan Otim chipped in with 12 points and
dished out five assists for the Patriots, who opened the
second half on a 28-4 run. Junior Tiffany Young was
the only other Blue Hen to reach double-figures in scoring
as she notched 10 points.
"We didn't control their penetration
during the first eight minutes of the second half and they
did whatever they wanted," said Delaware head coach Tina
Martin. "We also showed our youth on offense. We just lost
it for an eight to nine minute stretch in the second half.
At home, we would have knocked down those shots, but
unfortunately tonight, we lost our composure."
The Blue Hens (11-4, 3-3 CAA) took a
34-27 lead into halftime behind 16 points from Malcom -
including her first-career three-pointer - and seven from
freshman Tyresa Smith, but the Patriots opened the
second stanza with a 28-4 run. After Malcom scored to give
the Hens a 36-27 lead to open the second half scoring,
George Mason (9-4, 4-2 CAA) rallied to take a 38-36 lead
behind six points from Otim. The Patriots extended their
lead to 55-38 with 7:00 remaining behind Kristin Higy's six
points and five points from Jen Daniels. The Hens were then
held scoreless for the next 11:31 before Malcom stopped the
skid with a jumper at 8:09.
Delaware put forth a furious rally in the
final minutes, outscoring the Patriots 24-10 over the next
5:17 behind nine points from Malcom and two three-pointers
from freshman Alena Koshansky to cut the deficit to
65-62 with 1:27 remaining. The Patriots' Jen Derevjanik, a
pre-season CAA first-team selection in both the coaches and
media polls, hit consecutive shots to put the game away for
George Mason, who improved to 9-4 all-time against te Blue
Hens.
The Blue Hens were outrebounded for just
the second time this season, 40-25, and lost for just the
second time this season when leading at halftime.
Additionally, Delaware shot 83.3% from the free throw line,
its second-highest total of the season.
The Blue Hens return to action this
Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel at
1 p.m.
