Hot Play as Hens Pull Away with Strong Finish

DE -- Junior forward Tiara Malcom continued her
red-hot play with team-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds
as the University of Delaware broke open a close game with a
strong finish and posted a 70-61 Colonial Athletic
Association women's basketball victory Thursday night at the
Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (16-9, 8-8 CAA) won their
second straight game and continued their dominance over
long-time rival Drexel, downing the Dragons for the 12th
straight time. The game was the 50th meeting all-time
between the two teams.
Drexel (10-15, 7-9 CAA) led 30-29 at the
halftime but fell behind early in the second half and could
never catch up. The Dragons fired away from the outside and
connected on 11 of 24 three-point attempts led by forward
Ola Snytsina, who tied a school record with eight
three-pointers and led all scorers with 26 points. Guard
Catherine Scanlon added 16 points and pulled a game-high 13
rebounds. The Dragons shot just 39.1 percent from the field
in the second half (9 of 23) and committed 22 turnovers for
the game.
Malcom scored in double figures for the
14th straight game and surpassed the 20-point mark for the
seventh time this season. She hit on 6 of 10 shots from the
field and was 9 of 11 from the foul line despite playing
much of the second half in foul trouble. Freshman guard
Alena Koshansky added 11 points, including three
three-pointers, and fellow freshman guard Tyresa
Smith added 11 points and a team-high four assists for
the Hens.
The Blue Hens shot a season-best 57.5
percent from the field as they hit on 23 of 40 shots for the
game and also connected on 20 of 29 free throws. Delaware
shot 60 percent from the field in the first half (12 of 20)
but still trailed at the break. They pulled ahead in the
second half thanks to hitting 11 of 20 shots from the
field.
After Drexel took the 30-29 halftime
lead, Delaware came out strong in the second stanza, scoring
the first eight points of the half to take control as Smith
hit a jumper, Malcom completed a three-point play, and
Koshansky drained a three-pointer for a 37-30 lead with
17:56 remaining.
Delaware led the rest of the way but the
Hens could never quite pull away from the Dragons. Snytsina
hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 49-46 with 8:45 left
and Scanlon hit a layup with 4:58 remaining to make it a
four-point margin, but each time Delaware
responded.
The Delaware lead was just five points at
60-55 with 1:04 remaining but Amanda Blackstone
followed with four straight free throws, Malcom followed
with two free throws of her own, and Smith converted a
three-point play with seven seconds left to ice the win and
move the Blue Hens one game ahead of the Dragons in the
middle of the pack of the CAA standings with two games left
to play.
