into overtime with a three-pointer just before the
regulation buzzer and Tiara Malcom clinched the
victory with two free throws with 14 seconds left as the
University of Delaware held on for a 58-57 Colonial Athletic
Association women's basketball victory over rival Drexel
Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Center.
The Blue Hens, who won for the third time
in the last four games, rallied to send the game into
overtime after allowing a 10-point halftime lead slip away.
Delaware, which got team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds
from Malcom, 12 points from freshman guard Tyresa
Smith, and 11 points from Hayes, improved to 12-4
overall and kept pace in the CAA standings with a mark of
4-3.
Delaware, which also got nine rebounds
and four assists off the bench from guard Julie
Sailer and eight rebounds and nine points from
Tiffany Young, defeated the Dragons for the 11th
straight time since the 1998-99 season. The teams met for
the 48th time with the Hens now holding a 32-16 advantage.
Drexel, coming off a 31-point victory
over William & Mary Friday night, fell to 7-9 (4-3 CAA)
despite big efforts from forward Katrina Martin and center
Ola Snystina, who each poured in 23 points. Martin hit on 10
of 16 shots from the field while Snystina connected on four
three-pointers. Viktoria Hollosy came off the bench to add
eight rebounds and eight assists while Catherine Scanlon
contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
The Blue Hens outscored Drexel 17-5 over
the final 10 minutes of the first half, overcoming a 16-14
deficit and taking a seemingly comfortable 31-21 lead into
intermission. But Delaware's shooting went cold in the
second half as the Hens connected on just 27.6 percent (8 of
29) of their shots from the field, allowing the Dragons to
tie the game at 33-33 thanks to a 12-2 run to start the
stanza.
Young's layup tied the game again at
41-41 with 7:41 left, but Martin scored each of the Dragons'
next three field goals, including a jumper with 38 seconds
remaining that give Drexel a 47-44 lead. Smith answered with
a jumper for the Hens with 15 seconds left to cut the lead
to 47-46, but a layup from Snystina with 10 seconds
remaining moved the lead back up to three.
But the Hens came back to send the game
into overtime as Sailer and Hayes, both of whom came off the
bench for the first time this season, tied things up. After
Smith missed a jumper in the final seconds, Sailer got the
offensive rebound and passed to Hayes, who drained the
three-pointer just before the buzzer to extend the
game.
In the extra session, Drexel went up by
four points on three Scanlon free throws with 3:14 left but
Hayes scored five points to keep it close, converting a
conventional three-point play with 2:08 left to cut the lead
to 57-56. Drexel turned the ball over twice in the final two
minutes, setting the stage for Malcom, who hit the winning
free throws with 14 seconds left. The Dragons had one last
chance to win, but Scanlon's jumper with two seconds left
was off the mark and Sailer pulled down the rebound to
preserve the win.
"Our kids held their compusure and did
what they had to do in the second half to get the game into
overtime," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin,
whose team will host Towson Jan. 29. "Sailer's rebound and
assist was the biggest play of the game. In overtime we went
to our bread and butter and got the ball to
Tiara."
