Delaware 53, Virginia Commonwealth 50 February 9, 2003 Late Free Throws Lift Blue Hens to Victory; UD Moves Into First Place NEWARK, DE -- Carrie Timmins and Christine Cole each converted two free throws in the final 34 seconds as the University of Delaware rallied in the second half to post a 53-50 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over Virginia Commonwealth Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center. Tiara Malcom (33) led the Hens with 11 points and seven rebounds Delaware, which swept the season series that included a 69-45 win Jan. 9 in Richmond, VA, won its second straight game and its seventh in the last nine outings to improve to 14-6, 9-2 CAA and moved into first place in the league standings after Old Dominion's 98-95 overtime loss to James Madison Sunday. Delaware is 9-2 in the CAA while defending11-time defending champion ODU now stands at 8-2. Tiara Malcom posted her 17th double-figure scoring effort of the season with a team-high 11 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds and Julie Sailer chipped in with 10 points to lead the Hens. Delaware improved to 7-1 on the year at home. Virginia Commonwealth, which had won three of its last four, including a 67-56 win over Old Dominion Feb. 6 that snapped the Monarchs' 35-game conference winning streak, wasted a 20-point, 11-rebound effort from forward Kristine Austgulen and fell to 9-11, 6-5 CAA. Guard Cyndy Wilks added 13 points for the Rams, but her three-point attempt missed just before the buzzer, preserving the win for the Blue Hens. "This was a great defensive game," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "Both teams hustled and went after it hard. It was a war and we made the plays at the end when we needed to make them." Timmins, who was fouled by Natalia Oehninger on a three-point attempt with 34 seconds left and the Hens trailing 50-49, missed her first free throw but came back to sink the next two to give the Hens a 51-50 lead. VCU came back with a chance to win but Austgulen missed on a baseline jumper and Cole was fouled on the rebound. The 6-2 senior center, who entered the game shooting just 45 percent from the line, calmly sank both free throws to give the Hens a 53-50 lead with nine seconds remaining. Wilks had one last chance to send the game into overtime, but her long three-pointer missed. The Hens, who were coming off a 56-55 win at UNC Wilmington Thursday on Sailer's layup with five seconds left, overcame 17 turnovers and 39.5 percent shooting from the field by hitting on 18 of 24 free throws, including 14 of 19 in the second half. Virginia Commonwealth held a slim 31-30 rebounding advantage, but committed 20 turnovers and hit just 8 of 23 second half field goal attempts. Delaware held a 27-26 halftime lead but Wilks opened the second half with a three-pointer and the Rams held at least a share of the lead until the final seconds when Timmins put the Hens ahead for good. VCU upped their lead to as much as seven points twice in the second half, the last time at 44-37 with 8:51 left when Wilks nailed one of her three three-pointers on the day. But the Hens slowly fought back with a 10-4 run, cutting the gap to one point at 48-47 after Allison Trapp hit a jumper. Austgulen came right back for VCU with a three-pointer to up the lead to 50-47 with 3:24 remaining but that would be the Rams' last points of the day. Sailer answered for the Blue Hens with a jumper 29 seconds later to cut the lead to 50-49 and VCU missed three straight shots from the field before Timmins' hit the go-ahead free throws.
