Delaware 56, UNC Wilmington 55 February 6, 2003 Sailer Comes Up Big Down the Stretch as Hens Down Seahawks   Julie Sailer hit the winning layup with five seconds left to lift the Blue Hens WILMINGTON, NC -- Julie Sailer hit two big shots in the final seconds, including a layup in traffic with five seconds left, to lift the University of Delaware to a 56-55 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball win over host UNC Wilmington Thursday night at Trask Coliseum. Sailer, who scored 16 points, connected on a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to pull the Hens to within 55-54, and after UNC Wilmington missed two free throws two seconds later, came down and scored the winning basket. UNC Wilmington had one last chance to win the game but Delaware's Allison Trapp blocked a shot by Cherie Lea to preserve the victory. Delaware (13-6, 8-2 CAA) avenged an earlier 56-49 setback to UNC Wilmington back on Jan. 12 at the Bob Carpenter Center and downed UNC Wilmington at Trask in the final seconds for the second straight year. Last season, Delaware's Megan Dellegrotti, now a UD assistant coach, converted a layup with five seconds left in overtime to lift the Hens to a 56-54 victory. "Julie really came through for us down the stretch tonight," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team moved into sole possession of second place in the CAA standings behind Old Dominion. "I was unhappy with the way we ended the first half and I wanted us to take better shots in the second half. Those two shots by Julie in the end illustrated that. This is a great win for us." Sophomore forward Tiara Malcom led the Blue Hens with 18 points, including hitting 10 of 11 shots from the foul line, to go with six rebounds, while Sailer chipped in with 16 points and Tracey Howell came off the bench to add eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Malcom, who had a streak of 20 straight free throws made snapped in the first half, has now hit on 34 of 37 free throws in the last three games. The Seahawks, who hurt themselves by hitting just 9 of 17 shots from the foul line, had a two-game win streak snapped to fall to 15-4, 7-3 CAA. UNC Wilmington lost for just the second time in its last 10 games since Jan. 3. Lea came off the bench to lead the Seahawks with 19 points but no UNCW starter managed to score in double figures. Delaware held a 31-23 advantage on the boards. UNC Wilmington led by as much as six points in the first half before the Hens chipped away at the lead and eventually went up 15-14 with 6:54 left on a layup by freshman Juliette Warren. But the Seahawks came on strong to end the half, holding Delaware to just two field goals in the final seven minutes to take a 26-22 lead into intermission. The teams took turns owning the lead in the second half with UNCW going up by as much as five points in the first three minutes of the stanza and the Hens taking a five-point lead, its biggest of the game, at 43-38 with 11:04 remaining. The Seahawks battled back and regained the lead at 50-49 on two Shameka Montgomery free throws with 2:24 left and upped the margin to six when Rachel Wojdowski connected on two free throws and Lea nailed a three-pointer for a 55-49 led with 48 seconds left. But the Hens stormed back and the Seahawks wouldn't score again. Trapp connected on a jumper 12 seconds later to cut the gap to 55-51, and after Rachel Friesen-Norwood missed the front end of a one and one opportunity, Sailer came down and nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 55-54 with 18 seconds left.
