Delaware 75, James Madison 64 March 2, 2003 Trapp, Malcom Lead the Way as Hens Move Closer to No. 1 Seed Allison Trapp scored 14 points in each half HARRISONBURG, VA -- Allison Trapp scored 14 points in each half for a game-high 28 points and Tiara Malcom recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as the University of Delaware moved closer to the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and a fourth straight 20-win season with a 75-64 women's basketball win over James Madison Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center. The Blue Hens, who won their third straight game and seventh in the last eight outings, improved to 19-7 overall and tied for first place in the CAA standings with a mark of 14-3. If the Blue Hens can down last place Towson in the regular season finale Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center and Old Dominion falls to UNC Wilmington that same evening, Delaware would clinch the No. 1 seed for the upcoming CAA Tournament. Old Dominion has captured every CAA regular season and tournament championships since the 1995-96 season. Delaware last won a league title in 2000-01 when it captured the America East title and advanced to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. James Madison, which lost its first home conference game of the season and had a streak of 11 straight home wins snapped, fell to 16-10, 11-6 despite placing three scorers in double figures led by guard Shanna Price who scored 24 points. Forward Nadine Morgan added 15 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists while Mary Beth Culbertson, who entered the game averaging just four points per game, came off the bench and scored 14 points on four three pointers, all in the opening half. Trapp hit on 10 of 18 shots from the field and converted 8 of 11 free throws en route to her eighth 20-point effort and her second highest point total of the season. Carrie Timmins chipped in with 11 points and six assists while Tracey Howell came off the bench to add nine points and five rebounds. The Hens shot a season-best 53.2 percent from the field, hitting on 25 of 47 shots. Delaware shot over 50 percent in each half on its way to the victory. "We played outstanding tonight," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "Allison got some great looks and knocked them down and we gutted it out in the second half. This was a big challenge for us because James Madison had not lost a conference game at home all season. But our kids met that challenge today." Despite opening the game with an 8-0 spurt, Delaware couldn't hold on and James Madison eventually took a 33-31 advantage into intermission. Culbertson did much of the damage for the Dukes as she connected on four three-pointers, including three in a span of just under four minutes. James Madison upped the lead to four points early in the second half and still led 37-35 with 16:02 remaining before the Blue Hens got red-hot and took over the game. Delaware started an 18-6 run to take back the lead, upped the margin to double figures at 53-43 with 8:03 remaining, and never looked back. Trapp scored seven points during the run and Malcom contributed four to lead the Blue Hens. Delaware upped the lead to as much as 14 points at 64-50 with 3:30 left on two free throws by Julie Sailer. James Madison cut the lead back to single digits in the final minute, but never got closer than seven points. The Hens, the CAA leaders in free throws made and percentage, converted 24 of 33 free throws for the game and hit 11 of 14 in the final 1:11 of the game to keep the Dukes at bay.
