Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinals Delaware 68, Drexel 51 March 13, 2003 Trapp Scores 19 to lead Hens over Drexel in CAA Quarterfinals Allison Trapp (3) leads the Blue Hens into the semifinals against Virginia Commonwealth NORFOLK, VA -- Senior guard Allison Trapp scored a game-high 19 points as the University of Delaware began its quest for a Colonial Athletic Association title with a 68-51 victory over Drexel in a CAA women's basketball quarterfinal game Thursday afternoon at Old Dominion's Constant Convocation Center. The No. 2 seed Blue Hens (21-7), who tied Old Dominion for the CAA regular season title, won their fifth straight game and their ninth in the last 10 outings to advance to the CAA semfinals Friday where they will play No. 6 seed Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams upset No. 3 seed UNC Wilmington 76-66 on Thursday. Delaware swept the season series from VCU with wins of 69-45 and 53-50. Delaware, which won a first round conference tournament game for the fourth straight year, knocked Drexel from the tournament for the second straight year. The No. 7 seed Dragons (12-17) advanced with a 52-46 win over Towson in Wednesday's first round game. Delaware has now defeated Drexel 10 straight times since 1999-2000. Trapp, a first team All-CAA selection the league Co-Defensive Player of the Year, hit on 8 of 16 shots from the field and finished with 19 points to go with three steals. Forward Tiara Malcom, a second team All-CAA selection, finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Julie Sailer chipped in with 10 points and four assists and forward Tracey Howell came off the bench to add nine points and eight rebounds. "I thought it was important for us to get a big lead early," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team needed overtime to defeated Drexel 72-63 in last year's quarterfinals. "We changed up a few things and our kids adjusted well to those changes. I think you need an element of surprise in the post-season. Plus we played great defensively. Our kids came off with a lot of energy and played very well. The reason we win is not because we are the most talented team, but because we play as a team and play good defense." Drexel, which got 19 points and nine rebounds from forward Katrina Martin but had no other player reach double figures in scoring, struggled offensively all day. The Dragons shot just 33.3 percent from the field (18 of 54) for the game, including just 8 of 28 in the second half. Drexel also committed 20 turnovers and made just 9 of 20 shots from the foul line. Delaware committed just 13 turnovers and hit on 13 of 24 first half shots (54.3 percent) to jump out to a 33-25 halftime lead. Trapp scored 10 of the Blue Hens' first 10 points. The Dragons stayed close, however, and cut the lead to 22-20 with 5:07 left in the stanza. But the Blue Hens made their move from there, going on an 11-2 spurt to take a 33-22 lead. Drexel got a big boost just before the half when Bridget Scanlan nailed a three-pointer from halfcourt. The Hens got off to a quick start in the second half to put the game away, outscoring Drexel 14-5 over the first six minutes. Drexel never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way. Drexel ended the game on another half-court shot when Jackie Falson beat the buzzer.
