Delaware 51, Drexel 47 February 27, 2003 Blue Hens Use Big Run, Withstand One From Drexel for CAA Win Allison Trapp scored 15 points and collected seven steals NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware used a 28-4 run between the first and second halves to build a big lead then had to withstand a field goal drought of over 12 minutes before surviving with a 51-47 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over rival Drexel Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Drexel (10-15, 6-10 CAA) overcame a 17-point second half deficit and eventually took the lead with 5:08 remaining before Delaware pulled away in the closing minutes to post its ninth straight win over the Dragons. Delaware, which entered the game tied for first place in the CAA standings with UNC Wilmington and took a half-game lead due to the Seahawks being idle, improved to 18-7, 13-3 CAA with hits second straight win and sixth in the last seven outings. UNC Wilmington plays at Hofstra Friday night. Delaware, which also won its seventh straight home game, got 15 points and seven steals from guard Allison Trapp, 13 points from Tiara Malcom, and 11 rebounds from center Christine Cole to post the victory. Malcom reached double figures in scoring for the 21st time this season. The Hens overcame 23 turnovers and 23.5 percent shooting from the field (4 of 17) in the second half to post the victory. The Dragons, who lost their second straight and fell for the third time in the last four games, got 15 points from guard Steph Frysinger but no other player reached double figures. Drexel was also hurt by 21 turnovers and 35.4 field goal shooting (17 of 48) for the game. Delaware also held a 36-27 advantage on the boards. "This was a great win for us," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "These are tough games and the pressure is on us. Our kids stepped up tonight and we got the win." It was a game of runs for both teams. Drexel led 15-7after a Bridget Scanlan three-pointer with 12:46 left in the first half, but Delaware took off from there, scoring 16 unanswered points while holding the Dragons scoreless for nine minutes and 42 seconds. The Dragons missed nine straight field goals before Candice Williams scored her only basket of the game with 3:04 left in the stanza to cut the lead to 23-17. The Hens moved on to a 31-19 lead at the break as Trapp scored 10 first-half points. It was more of the same for the Hens to open the second stanza as Delaware scored seven of the first nine points to up the lead to 17 points at 38-21 with 16:59 remaining. But Drexel wasn't about to give up and clawed back into the game as the Dragons embarked on a 21-2 run and took the lead at 42-40 on two free throws with Synia Willis with 5:08 remaining. Delaware finally ended a drought of 12 minutes and 17 seconds without a field goal as Trapp hit a jumper to tie the game and Cole connected three free throws over a 26-second span to put the Hens up for good at 45-42. Drexel pulled to within two points one more time when Frysinger converted two free throws with 37 seconds left, but Delaware guard Carrie Timmins iced the game with two free throws with 21 seconds left.
