Timmins scores
career-high 13 points to lead Blue Hens to 10th win in 11
games
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Senior
guard Carrie Timmins scored a career-high 13 points,
including three 3-point field goals in the second half, as
the University of Delaware downed the Drexel Dragons 48-47
in a turnover-plagued Colonial Athletic Association women's
basketball game Thursday night at the Daskalakis Center.
The Blue Hens (10-4, 5-1), who committed
26 turnovers, dominated the Dragons on the glass,
outrebounding them 39-19, en route to earning their
eighth-straight victory against the Dragons.
Delaware senior guard Allison
Trapp, who entered the game second in the CAA in scoring
at 18.1 ppg, led the Hens in scoring with 14 points, while
sophomore forward Julie Sailer pulled down a
team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Tracey Howell
just missed completing her first career double-double,
posting a season-high nine points and eight rebounds, and
sophomore forward Tiara Malcom dropped in eight
points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out a
career-high four assists.
Drexel, which fell to 7-9 overall and 3-4
in conference play, got 13 points from Catherine Scanlan,
while Bridget Scanlon dropped in nine. Drexel could not
overcome 19 turnovers. Also for the Dragons, Katrina Martin
notched eight points and five rebounds and Steph Frysinger,
the team's leading scorer, was held to just four
points.
Trailing 48-47, Scanlon grabbed a rebound
off a Sailer missed free throw and called timeout, giving
the Dragons a chance to win the game. After inbounding the
ball, Drexel dribbled the clock down to two seconds before
Frysinger misfired on an 18-foot jumper as time
expired.
Drexel opened the game with a
three-pointer by Martin and led throughout the half on the
strength of Scanlan's two three-point field goals, taking a
27-25 lead into the half.
Both teams traded misses for the first
three minutes of the second half before Trapp's jumper
knotted the game at 27-27. The Blue Hens took the lead on a
Timmins three-pointer, her first of three in the half, with
13:07 left to go and never relinquished the lead.
Delaware extended the lead to eight on a
bucket by senior forward Christine Cole with 9:08 to
go in the second half, but three-pointers by Bridget Scanlon
and Jackie Falso helped cut the deficit to one with under
two minutes to play. Both Sailer and Malcom missed the front
end of a bonus situation, giving Drexel several chances to
regain the lead.
The Blue Hens return to action this
Sunday when they take on CAA rival William & Mary at the
Bob Carpenter Center. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
