Career Highs to Lead Hens
NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward
Tiara Malcom matched career highs with 18 points and
13 rebounds to lead the University of Delaware to a 71-45
women's basketball non-league victory over Bucknell
University in a turnover-plagued game Sunday at the Bob
Carpenter Center.

Malcom, a 6-1 forward from Wilmington, DE
(Caravel), hit on 7 of 12 shots from the field for the game
and scored 12 points in the second half as the Blue Hens
(2-3) pulled away for their second straight victory.
Sophomore forward Julie Sailer added 16 points and
seven rebounds, senior guard Allison Trapp added 16
points, and freshman forward LaShannen Hogue came off
the bench to contribute 10 points as Delaware extended its
non-league home winning streak to 17 games since
1997-98.
Bucknell, a 2001 NCAA Tournament
qualifier as the Patriot League champion, had a three-game
win streak snapped to fall to 3-4 on the season. Forward
Jennie Ruth came off the bench to score a team-high 15
points while senior guard Molly Creamer added 12 points and
five steals. Creamer, the two-time Patriot League Player of
the Year who entered the game averaging 28 points per game,
hit on just 3 of 14 shots from the field, 1 of 8 from the
three-point line, and committed 10 turnovers.
The teams combined to commit 56 turnovers
and 39 fouls. Bucknell turned the ball over 30 times and
shot just 31.8 percent from the field (14 of 44). Delaware
overcame 26 turnovers by holding a 46-24 advantage on the
boards, including a 19-5 edge in offensive rebounds. The
Hens shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half (15
of 27) as they pulled away from a five-point halftime
lead.
"Bucknell is an NCAA Tournament team so
this is a big win for us," said Delaware head coach Tina
Martin. "We took it right to them and did exactly what
we wanted to do. It paid off for us."
Delaware jumped out to a slim 28-23
halftime lead and took control early in the second half,
scoring the first nine points of the stanza to go up 37-23
with 17:48 left to play. Bucknell answered with five
straight points of their own, but the Hens responded with
six more unanswered points and 13 of the next 17 to take a
50-32 lead with 11:04 left to play.
The Bison never got closer than 15 points
the rest of the way as the turnovers mounted. Bucknell did
not score a field goal after Kate Franks hit a jumper with
8:05 remaining to cut the lead to 56-41.
Delaware will return to action Dec. 23 at
home vs. Marist.
