Delaware 69, Virginia Commonwealth 60 February 3, 2002 Quick Start Leads Blue Hens to Eighth Straight Win Christina Rible led the Hens with 16 points NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware used a torrid first half shooting display to jump out to a 19-point halftime lead and held on for a 69-60 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (16-4, 9-2 CAA) won their eighth straight game with a typical balanced effort as four Delaware players scored in double figures. Forward Christina Rible led the way with 16 points while guards Allison Trapp and Megan Dellegrotti each chipped in with 14 points and forward Julie Sailer came off the bench to add 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Dellegrotti moved her career point total to 998, just two shy of joining Rible as a 1,000-point scorer. Trapp reached double figures for the 14th time in her last 15 games. Virginia Commonwealth, which had defeated the Hens 62-57 back on Jan. 6 in Richmond, VA, fell to 9-11, 6-5 but lost for just the second time in its last eight games. Forwards Cyndy Wilks and Kristine Austgulen each led the Rams with 13 points while guard ShaVohn McKinnon added 10 points. Austgulen added a team-high six rebounds. Delaware, which won for the 27th time in its last 28 home games at the Bob Carpenter Center, hit 20 of 40 shots from the field for the game and finished at 50 percent from the field for the first time this season. The Hens used a 35-28 rebounding edge and 27 of 35 accuracy from the foul line to offset 24 turnovers. It was a hot start that propelled the Blue Hens to the victory. Delaware jumped out to leads of 10-1 and 24-9 as they held VCU without a field goal for the first four minutes and 57 seconds of the game until Rochelle Luckett connected on a three-pointer. Delaware rolled from there, going up by as much as 21 points before heading into intermission up 44-25. The Hens shot 67 percent from the field for the first half, hitting the nets on 14 of 21 attempts. Virginia Commonwealth refused to give up in the second half, chipping away at the lead and pulling to within seven points at 55-48 with 8:30 left to play on a three-pointer by Wilks. But that was as close as they would get. Delaware followed with an 8-2 run of its own to go up 63-50 with 4:43 remaining and stayed in front by double figures until the final seconds.
