points

RICHMOND, VA -- The University of
Delaware women's basketball squad had its five-game win
streak snapped and suffered its first-ever Colonial Athletic
Association loss as host Virginia Commonwealth outscored the
Blue Hens 12-6 over the last five minutes of the game to
post a 62-57 victory Sunday afternoon at the ALLTEL
Pavilion
Delaware, which fell to 8-3, 2-1 CAA, got
18 points from Megan Dellegrotti while Allison
Trapp added 14 points and five steals and Julie
Sailer chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
Christine Cole was scoreless but pulled a team-high
nine rebounds. The Hens had the chance to tie the game in
the final seconds but Dellegrotti's open three-pointer from
the top of the key with 2.4 seconds left just missed.
Virginia Commonwealth (4-9, 1-3 CAA),
which gave head coach David Glass his 100th career victory,
won its first league game of the season and snapped a
four-game losing streak. Guard Cyndy Wilks led four scorers
in double figures with 16 points off the bench. Forward
Kristine Austgulen added 13 points and a game-high 10
rebounds while Rochelle Luckett added 12 points and six
assists despite nine turnovers.
"We just made too many mistakes in the
final five minutes," said Delaware head coach Tina
Martin, whose team returns home Jan. 11 to take on No.
24 ranked Old Dominion at the Bob Carpenter Center. "We did
some silly things and made some bad decisions that are
uncharacteristic of our team. We played an older team with
experienced guards and we showed our youth at times. We had
some open looks. I'll take that shot by Megan anytime, but
it just didn't fall today."
Delaware stayed close despite a poor
shooting performance in which the Hens connected on just 15
of 51 shots from the field (29 percent), including 2 of 13
shooting from the three-point arc. The Hens also committed
25 turnovers. Virginia Commonwealth, which has already lost
twice this season to No. 24 Old Dominion, overcame 28
turnovers by shooting 47 percent from the field (22 of 47),
including five three-pointers.
Delaware trailed 32-30 at halftime but
regained the lead on Dellegrotti's 300th career
three-pointer just seconds into the second half. The second
stanza featured seven lead changes and six ties. Delaware
took its final lead at 51-50 on a steal and layup by Trapp
with 6:08 left to play, but had several chances to get it
back.
But the Rams held the Hens at bay,
breaking the sixth tie of the half on two Wilks free throws
with 5:31 left for a 52-51 lead. Dellegrotti hit two free
throws to cut the lead to 56-55 with 3:26 left, but Wilks
followed with a three-point play as VCU extended the lead to
four. Dellegrotti added a jumper with 2:14 left to cut the
lead to 59-57, but Luckett hit a free throw with 25 seconds
left for a three-point lead.
Sailer missed the chance to tie the game
on a three-pointer with 7.5 seconds left, but VCU travelled
after the rebound, giving Delaware one more opportunity.
After a timeout, Trapp inbounded the ball to an open
Dellegrotti at the top of the circle, but the senior was off
target and VCU's Meagan Evans grabbed the rebound.
