Megan Dellegrotti scored 13 points and hit the winning basket with five seconds left in overtime

WILMINGTON, NC -- Megan Dellegrotti hit a falling, underhanded layup with five seconds left to give the Blue Hens the lead and Tiara Malcom followed with a steal and free throw as the University of Delaware edged host UNC Wilmington 56-54 in overtime in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Friday night at the Trask Coliseum.

The Blue Hens (8-2, 2-0 CAA) overcame an early four-point deficit in overtime to win their fifth straight game as Dellegrotti (Berwick/Berwick, PA) had 13 points and Lindsay Davis (Riverdell/River Edge, NJ) and Julie Sailer (Council Rock/Washington Crossing, PA) each contributed their first career double-doubles. Sailer had 12 points and 12 rebounds while Davis added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

UNC Wilmington, one of the hottest teams in the CAA, had a four-game win streak snapped to fall to 7-4, 1-1. Jennifer Kapper led the Seahawks with 14 points but connected on just 4 of 23 shots from the field, including 3 of 14 from beyond the three-point arc. Shameka Montgomery added 13 points and 12 rebounds and Tracy Morgan chipped in with nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

"On the road, there is never such a thing as a safe lead," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team let an 11-point second half lead slip away in the final 10 minutes. "UNC Wilmington is a good team that is playing very well right now. I'm proud that we were able to pull out a tough win on the road."

The Hens, who outrebounded the Seahawks 56-40 to overcome 30.2 percent shooting from the field (19 of 63), won their sixth straight conference game dating back to last season when the Blue Hens competed as members of the America East conference. The game marked the first meeting between the two schools.

Delaware scored 10 of the last 13 points of the opening half to jump out to a 24-17 halftime lead and extended the cushion to 11 points at 38-27 with 10:13 left in regulation. But the Seahawks battled back to tie the score several times, knotting the game at 44-44 with 43 seconds left in regulation on a free throw by Jan Williams.

The Hens came back to take the lead at 46-44 on a jumper by Sailer with 13 seconds left, but UNCW sent the game into the extra session on a basket by Kapper with four seconds remaining in regulation.

UNCW jumped out to a 50-46 lead in the first two minutes of the extra session, but the Hens settled down and tied the score at 53-53 with 45 seconds left on two Dellegrotti free throws. Kapper hit one of two free throws for a 54-53 UNCW lead with 22 seconds left before Dellegrotti came back with her game-winning shot with five seconds left. The senior point guard scored five of her 13 points in the extra session.

After Dellegrotti gave the Hens a 55-54 lead, Malcom sealed the win when she stepped in front of a pass by Williams and was fouled. The freshman hit one free throw to ice the game.

The Hens will continue CAA road action Sunday when they travel to Richmond, VA to take on Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m.
