Delaware 68, Towson 51 January 13, 2002 Megan Dellegrotti led the Blue Hens with 25 points and six assists TOWSON, MD -- Senior guard Megan Dellegrotti (Berwick/Berwick, PA) connected on 7 of 11 shots from the field and 10 of 12 from the line for 25 points and also dished out a game-high six assists to lead the University of Delaware to a 68-51 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball victory over host Towson Sunday afternoon at the Towson Center. Dellegrotti, Delaware's leading scorer entering the game at 15.6 points per game, hit for 20 or more points for the fourth time this season as the Blue Hens (9-4, 3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak. Senior forward Christina Rible, playing in just her second game after missing five games with a broken pinkie finger, added 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and junior guard Allison Trapp chipped in with 10 points. Towson, which lost its 10th straight game, fell to 1-13 and remained winless in league play with an 0-5 mark. Mia Chapman scored a team-high 16 points, including four three-pointers, and Shonte Simpson added 10 points and four assists. The Tigers shot just 36.4 percent from the field (16 of 44) and committed 25 turnovers. Towson has not won a game since a 55-54 win over Navy back on Nov. 28 and they have lost all five of their league games by at least 14 points. The Blue Hens, who never trailed, jumped out on top quickly, scoring the first 10 points of the game and holding the Tigers scoreless until a free throw by Simpson with 13:35 left in the first half. Towson didn't score its first field goal until the 10:55 mark when Cherron Johnson converted. Towson chipped away at the lead and pulled to within five points at 19-14 with 4:08 left before half. The Hens followed with an 8-0 run which led to a 27-19 lead at halftime. Dellegrotti scored 13 of her 25 points in the opening 20 minutes. Another quick start in the second half helped the Hens build up the lead as Delaware started out 8-0 behind two field goals by Trapp and one each by Dellegrotti and Rible for a 37-21 lead. Towson again chipped away and eventually pulled to within eight points at 54-46 with 2:59 left. But Delaware took off from there, closing strong for the 17-point victory. Backup point guard Carrie Timmins scored six points in the final 2:22 to lead the Hens down the stretch. Delaware recovered from a poor-shooting first half (7 of 22) to convert on half of their second half field goal tries (15 of 30) and were strong once again from the line, scoring on 23 of 29 chances. The Hens return to action Thursday, Jan. 17 at CAA foe George Mason.
